Default ID'ing department with paint ID codes on door tag

If you're trying to ID the original department of an SSP, and the buck tag is missing, here is a list I have come up with after databasing door tags and buck tags. This list is for 1989 - 1993 only, as that is where the majority of "special" paint color codes were used on the door tag and buck tag. I have only seen one before '89 (an '85 CHP).

1989
California Highway Patrol. . W0046 and M1724
Florida Highway Patrol . . . W1677 and M1724
Georgia State Patrol . . . . M6062 and M5979
Michigan State Police. . . . W8141 and M6188
South Carolina . . . . . . . W2813 and M6062
Texas Dept of Public Safety. W0046 and M1724

1990
California Highway Patrol. . W0046 and M1724
Florida Highway Patrol . . . W1677 and M1724
Georgia State Patrol . . . . W2007 and M6383
North Carolina . . . . . . . W2813 and M1724
South Carolina . . . . . . . W2813 and M6330
Texas Dept of Public Safety. W0046 and M1724

1991
Florida Highway Patrol . . . W1677 and M1724
Georgia State Patrol . . . . W2007 and M6383
South Carolina . . . . . . . W2813 and M6401

1992
California Highway Patrol. . W0046 and M1724
Florida Highway Patrol . . . W1677 and M1724 (through 03/92)
Florida Highway Patrol . . . W1677 and M6373 (04/92 and later)
Georgia State Patrol . . . . W2007 and M6383
Kansas Highway Patrol. . . . W2007 and M6290
Michigan State Police. . . . W8141 and M6290
South Carolina . . . . . . . W2813 and M6401

1993
California Highway Patrol. . M6547 and M6373
Florida Highway Patrol . . . W1677 and M6373
Texas Dept of Public Safety. W0046 and M6373

Very interesting! Certainly should help a lot of people in the future

I am curious which 85 SSP you have seen with this?

The one CHP I was thinking of is 28HopUp's car (#8395) but all of them seem to be this way...

door tag shows 1C
primary buck tag shows no paint code
DSO buck tag shows White WT0046 and Black 1C
Marti report shows "Special Paint"
Eminger invoice shows "Special Paint", and M1724 Black and W0046 White

Is this thread a "sticky"? If not it would be a good one to do that with.

Thanks Mick! That information is quite timely, because I have been exchanging emails with Kevin Marti this week about the paint codes used on SSPs with "special paint". Good stuff! And I agree with Mike, so this is now a sticky.

After reading and responding to Sam's question, and looking back at my original post, I now realize that I should not have said that I had seen "special" paint color codes on '85 door tags.

I had gotten that info from spreadsheet I created (HERE), and 85 CHP #8395 shows special paint codes, even though that's not what was on the door tag (probably only 1C is, like the rest), but rather WT0046 and 1C was on the DSO buck tag.

After looking at available documentation from other CHPs in the same batch, their codes are as I have posted in #3 above.

I will try to keep this list updated as I come across new agency door tags that confirm their respective paint codes from each year. Texas DPS has been added to the 1989 and 1990 lists.

To add even more info to this thread, here are the actual paint names (and sometimes also the regular production paint code) for the above 'special paint' codes...

1989
W0046 and M1724 = White and (1C) Black
W1677 and M1724 = Cream and (1C) Black
M6062 and M5979 = (1K) Light Grey and (7H) Bright Regatta Blue
W8141 and M6188 = Blue and (7N) Deep Shadow blue
W2813 and M6062 = Grey and (1K) Light Grey

1990
W0046 and M1724 = White and (YC) Black
W1677 and M1724 = Cream and (YC) Black
W2007 and M6383 = Grey and (MM) Ultra Blue
W2813 and M1724 = Grey and (YC) Black
W2813 and M6330 = Grey and (YF) Light Titanium

1991
W1677 and M1724 = Cream and (UA) Black
W2007 and M6383 = Grey and (MM) Ultra Blue
W2813 and M6401 = Grey and (YX) Titanium Frost

1992
W0046 and M1724 = White and (UA) Black
W1677 and M1724 = Cream and (UA) Black
W1677 and M6373 = Cream and (UA) Black
W2007 and M6383 = Grey and (MM) Ultra Blue
W2007 and M6290 = Grey and (MK) Twilight Blue
W2813 and M6401 = Grey and (YX) Titanium Frost
W8141 and M6290 = Blue and (MK) Twilight Blue

1993
M6547 and M6373 = (WB) Vibrant White and (UA) Black
W1677 and M6373 = Cream and (UA) Black
W0046 and M6373 = White and (UA) Black
