Mike,

Surprisingly a check for leaks proved negative (amazing considering the age of the car) and he simply recharged it. The cost of freon was 80 bucks a pound but it takes only two pounds. Since it's a sealed system it should be good for the foreseeable future. It was cheaper than the conversion which was quoted by another shop at $700 !

My mechanic here told me the same thing John, he said you don't need to replace seals unless they are bad.

I was going to try it. But now that you say it works fine, I'll have to take mine in to have it charged.

A few years back I took mine to a shop that did a leak test with negative results. They recharged it and it lasted about a month then quit blowing cold. I think I paid close to $200 also.
