Mike,

Surprisingly a check for leaks proved negative (amazing considering the age of the car) and he simply recharged it. The cost of freon was 80 bucks a pound but it takes only two pounds. Since it's a sealed system it should be good for the foreseeable future. It was cheaper than the conversion which was quoted by another shop at $700 !
