1982 CHP 0336

Billl, Another exciting (to me!) '82 CHP find. 0336 is alive and well. Please add to the project when time permits. VIN 213139.

As a quick update, I have had some access issues to the site, which happens sometimes. Mike got me fixed up today, so I can again add more cars to the Project.

Here's an 86 that was at the top of my pending folder:

http://www.specialservicemustang.net...info246999.htm

I'll get more added shortly, and will note the pages here that are interesting.

What The .........

Has anyone seen this, talked about this?
So much is just WRONG.

Also Good to have You Back Bill:)

28HopUp 08-27-2021 01:29 PM

Thanks Andy.

Yes, I remember seeing that car being posted up at the end of last year. So many incorrect things done to it, and the OJ story is just utter nonsense. Somebody paid too much for that, IMO.

Check out this 1993 USPS that showed up on FB -

28HopUp 09-26-2021 07:06 AM

I was up early today because I had a pork tenderloin in the smoker, so I thought I would work on a few cars in the Project.

This 1991 FHP was already listed in our Project using DMV information. The car had been restored a while back and sold. The current owner has repurposed the vehicle for his business. I think most of us have seen this car, but someone on FB took some photos and was able to get the VIN off the dash to confirm that it was this restored car.

http://www.specialservicemustang.net...info141368.htm

28HopUp 09-26-2021 07:22 AM

This 1993 GSA car is noteworthy for no other reason than the fact that it is the final VIN in a consecutive batch of 39 cars that are all from the same DSO number (#83-3060) -

http://www.specialservicemustang.net...info166958.htm

One of those 39 is a confirmed USPS car, so I wonder how the Federal government utilized the other 38 cars in this batch?

28HopUp 09-26-2021 07:30 AM

Another GSA car (this time a 1992) that was already in our Project, but the owner provided a clear photo of the Buck Tags -

28HopUp 09-26-2021 07:50 AM

Mick/FoxChassis sent me a photo he found on FB of the Buck Tags for an 89 TXDPS car. It was already in the Project because of the auction information provided by Tom. Due to the way this Project was designed we can always add more photos or make other necessary changes. Note that the tag says STATE OF TEXAS (meaning it could have been used in any capacity by the State), yet the car is confirmed as a TXDPS unit -

http://www.specialservicemustang.net...info232672.htm

Pretty cool!

28HopUp 09-26-2021 08:15 AM

The last addition for today is a 1993 TXDPS car that I had pictures of in my folder for a few months. I do not recall the source of the photos.

Update on Totals

After making the latest additions to the Project, here are the totals by year of where we stand on documenting SSP Mustangs -

1982 --- 30
1983 --- 52
1984 --- 82
1985 -- 277
1986 -- 180
1987 -- 444
1988 -- 432
1989 -- 565
1990 -- 440
1991 -- 233
1992 -- 313
1993 -- 520
------------
. . . 3,573 SSP Mustangs confirmed

Technically, we know that the 394 units grouped together in 1982 are all SSP Mustangs built for the CHP (the last 6 VINs in that batch of 400 were not manufactured by Ford), so the total is actually closer to 4K SSP Mustangs. Not too shabby!

That’s a lot of great work, thank you. What has it been now, about 10 1/2 years, since the VIN project went live?

28HopUp 09-26-2021 07:57 PM

Mike, you're right about how long it's been. We should have thrown a party a few months back to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Project. I'm glad that new cars are continuing to show up and get documented.

MOstang 09-30-2021 08:33 PM

Happy 10th Anniversary, a great milestone. Thanks again!

Thank you, Mike! The best part for me is interacting and meeting people, like you, who are a credit to the SSP hobby.

1987 Nebraska SSP

The new owner of this SSP from Nebraska State Patrol contacted me on FB. It is the first NSP to surface from the 1987 model year and is part of a 30-car consecutive VIN batch.

That's why I included a photo of the car coming out of the barn. The owner is planning to do a quick turn-around on getting this one in better shape. He calls it a "budget restoration": detailing the car; repairing/replacing some of the interior; having authentic markings done; and adding the correct light bar. I hope he joins up here and posts his progress.

28HopUp 11-18-2021 10:02 AM

Danny Jenkins recently posted up on FB about saving a 1986 Nevada Highway Patrol SSP Mustang. The car is certainly worthy of being saved! He shared some pictures with me in order to add the car to the Project -

WOW my interior was exactly like that as I found her in 2010 and cleaned her out and looks exactly like that as "after" condition.

28HopUp 12-08-2021 12:26 PM

I MAY be a bit biased, but I had to add a photo of this red SSP to its page

http://www.specialservicemustang.net...info256164.htm

28HopUp 12-08-2021 12:42 PM

Here is the 83rd 84 SSP to be added to our Project -

http://www.specialservicemustang.net...info205248.htm

It's a CHP car that is part of the second batch of VINs for that particular DSO number. Yes, this single DSO was split into different consecutive batches which are separated by over 1,000 VINs. This example of how Ford grouped the VINs is the reason we do not automatically claim that cars whose VIN is between two confirmed SSP cars, even in consecutive batches, is also a SSP Mustang (it probably is, but we need more corroboration to claim it as such).

28HopUp 12-13-2021 10:26 PM

This 1993 NCSHP was at the 2021 Foxtoberfest show -

Jim and I had a nice talk with the owner.

Corrective Action Taken

One of the nice things about how Mike set up the Project was the ability to easily make changes to existing pages as new data emerged. Here is a good example of this -

http://www.specialservicemustang.net...info252689.htm

The above car was added to our Project in May 2021 after it popped up for sale on FB. The seller had indicated that the car was originally ordered by the Oregon State Police. The rollbar reinforced that opinion, so we used the necessary photos and listed the car as an unconfirmed OSP car. Well, the new owner recently posted up on FB that he inspected the Buck Tags and it turns out the car was ordered for Idaho. Now this could be the ISP, the State of Idaho, or even a smaller agency in the state, so we only identified the car by what is written on the tag - "IDAHO".

I'd like to thank Mick/Foxchassis for recently sending me 22 photos (including the above car) for use in the VIN Project. In most cases, these will be used to bolster existing cars in the Project. But the added value is appreciated!

1992 Kane County SSP

This one popped up on FB -

There are two in-service photos of this unmarked Deep Emerald Green SSP, too!

1986 UHP

I always love adding 4-eye SSP's to the Project. This one also popped up on FB -

28HopUp 01-04-2022 11:24 AM

The last one is Matt's 93 FHP that he has listed for sale on FB. He posted a photo of the VIN label, which I added to the page that previously only had the information provided by JimY.

1987 UHP & Daggett County SSP

Danny Jenkins recently picked up another SSP - a 1987 Utah Highway Patrol SSP Mustang...

http://www.specialservicemustang.net...info229989.htm

...that was also used by Daggett County. Danny took the time when picking up the car to stop at the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah. Those photos were also included in the Project.

VINs for Two More SMPV Cars ID'd

As I was going through some electronic files, I found two photos of two similar SMPV cars from the 1989 CHP program. At the time the photos were saved, we did not have the VIN Project in full swing. Now I was able to cross reference the unit numbers on the license plates to two VINs that were confirmed CHP cars but had not been identified as being cars used as Specially Marked Patrol Vehicles.

I wanted to take a moment to say THANK YOU to Mick for his continued help with the Project. He forwards photos he finds online that we can use here. Presently (as in these are the most recent ones on my To-Do List), Mick has sent pictures to add 8 new SSP's and update the pages of 10 others. It is greatly appreciated!

If anyone sees any SSP photos that can be used here, feel free to post them in this thread. :)

This (originally) white 1989 Missouri State Highway Patrol SSP was posted on CL:

Using one of the photos that showed the VIN label, I was able to add this car to the Project:
