Default Power steering pump pulley removal - help!!

This is on my '82 CHP. Ron had issues with the power steering fluid leaking out and did tell me about it. Sure enough, before long, she started to whine. And I have barely driven the car since I got it. I'm the not-so-proud owner of a stain on my driveway. Yep, she does leak, somewhere. Judging by the looks of the rack and pinion, I may be replacing that next. Ahem, may be getting that replaced next. Not gonna be me that does that one.

This weekend, I attempted to remove the pump to replace it and the hoses. The question is simple: How do you get the pulley off? Everywhere I read, all it said was use a pulley puller. Well, the front center of the pulley was caked with dirt and I didn't know how it was fastened. I put the puller on and the tip dug out some dirt, so I started digging and cleaned that out. I found a 3/8" hex "hole" and got out my allen wrenches. That thing would not budge. I was trying to break it loose with the belt still on. No go.

I read some more, and like I said, everything says use a puller. So I put that back on. My neighbor came over to lend a hand and together we started to bend the pulley - the rear lip started pulling forward. OK, so now I've ruined the pulley itself.

Today I removed the pump, pulley and bracket as a unit. Of course, now it's even harder to fight with it off the car. Can someone tell me how this thing is supposed to come off? Is there a plug that needs to be removed first with a 3/8" allen bit or is this thing just seized and supposed to come off with the puller?

Please help!! I need this bracket. I have a new pump & reservoir waiting to go on and now need a new pulley. I may be looking for a bracket if I can't get this one apart.

Using the puller should do it but make sure that you are using a direct threaded puller not a 3 or 4 prong puller. If you use the pronged pullers you could warp the pulley and cause you problems when you reinstall it.

Too late. I was using a two-prong puller. Got a pic of what you're talking about?

Hmmm, OK. Thanks. Now, where can I find a new pulley? Dealership? Time for bed. I'll run the part number on Google tomorrow.

Default Power steering pulley!

After you get a pulley, don't forget to pick up a " Ford Power Steering Pump Pulley Installer". It looks similar to the first picture of a puller posted by GSPI, but smaller thread at the end. It threads into the pump shaft and gently seats the pulley. As they say, " when you have the proper tools" job goes much easier.
As a side note check the installer tool, the one I purchased was used, re packaged returned for a refund and put back on the shelf to be sold as "new".

When I got to work this morning, I shot an email to my master mechanic friend and included Greg's photos. He actually has that threaded puller that also installs the new pulley. I've just got to find a new pulley and take everything to work with me and he'll remove and install all at the same time.

Much appreciated, guys. I was sure stuck on this one. You are so right about having the right tools. From everything I read, I thought I had them.

I may have just really messed up. The part number for the pulley is D9ZC3D673A7A and one thread on mustanggt.org says it was used up through the car in question there which was an '85 5-spd GT. Not sure how much longer it was used. He also said the dealership said it was obsolete...and that was posted in 2001.

If anyone has a spare, please let me know. I'll be headed to FEP to search over there, too.

Based on that part number alone it's for a 1979 and up pulley. The power steering pump is also the same from 1979 to around 1999 when checking the cross reference, I would think this pulley is the same no matter what. The scary part is that there really are only two PS pump manufacturers in the US and many of the various car manufacturers use one or the other. You might be able to get away with taking a measurement off of a different model year and get the same fit as long as you align the pulleys correctly. I'll pass that part number to my Ford Parts guy tomorrow and see what they find.

Ok I found a new pulley for you. Ford pricing was $122.00 when available (discontinued when I ran it through the Ford parts system) but CJponyparts.com has it for only $115.95!?

So... I guess you could try and find a LKQ in the junk yard with a pump attached maybe as all 5.0L Mustangs from 1979 to 1993 used the same pulley.
