1984 CHP speedometer cluster not working
Purchased an 84 CHP recently that needs a lot of work. The speedometer cluster is not working and I want to address this problem first. So first question, can it be repaired. If so does anyone have detailed instructions to do the repair (maybe YouTube video) or member on this forum can do the repair for reason price. Second question, Is attempt to repair worth time and expense or should I starting looking on Ebay or CL for a used working cluster. Any advice on how to proceed would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

Congrats on the purchase! If it is not already listed in our VIN Project, then please post up the details in our VIN Research thread.
Before you go shopping for a new speedo, I recommend a good old fashioned inspection of the car. Check to make sure the cable is attached at the tranny and the cluster. With the dash out, you can drive the car (or safely put the rear up with jackstands and engage the drivetrain) to see if the cable is spinning. Those would be the first things I would do, since the original 140mph speedometers are rare and pricey when found.

1984 CHP speedometer not working
The 84 in question was verified through the VIN registry as being unit 2748.
With the purchase, the previous owner gave me The ford owner card that showed the in service date, E plate number: E862748, and other details. I pulled the driver side rear quarter and found the build sheet. That was a cool feeling, knowing this unit has passed through many hands and I was the lucky one to discover it. However, thanks again Bill for responding and giving a starting point with the speedo cluster. I will try to post pics but my iPhone does seem to be compatible with upload photos on this is site. Think I have to consult with my IT buddy on this as I'm a little slow in this area. |

Can you post a pic of the build sheet? Are the buck tags still on the radiator?

Yes, I have pics of the build sheet, door sticker, and owner card. Great idea Bill, I know you guys have no patience for the tech challenged, especially for these kind of finds. Enjoy!
