I contacted Aaron, who has spent a great deal of time researching VINs and license plate numbers on the California Smog Certificate website:

http://www.bar.ca.gov/pubwebquery/ve...pubtstqry.aspx

It is VERY tedious to search and keep track of this information. Most of the searches turn up empty, but so far Aaron has been able to match the certificate numbers on five VINs to a specific license plate number, thus confirming the unit number for those cars. I grabbed screenshots of the information for those other four cars, and created the following pages in our project:

Thanks Aaron!!! Let us know if you can match any more...
Great....now you guys got me thinking about (actually already started on) another project.

Grabbing the test history for "known" (using the VIN Project) batches of CA vehicles is tedious work but I can do it and database the results. What I don't know how to do is come up with E plate numbers.

Another idea I'll try to work on if you want.

What if we started a list of all known CHP SSP plate numbers, we can add to it and I can make a few trips to the CHP Academy and Fleet Services and talk to the CHP photographer and go through and see how many photos I can come up with of the actual unit numbers we have on our list.

Make copies for our list, plus members can receive a copy of their car in service when found, IF any are found.

There has got to be a ton of them out there. Just take the time looking.
Mike ( Mac88CHP ) has offered to help out in that area as well with assignment cards.

He now has a pretty good " in " at the academy with a Sgt. or two I introduced him to, one who heads up the museum at the academy, plus the EVOC Sgt. who is very cool and I know will pull some strings for us.

I think they would like to see more CHP SSP's out there at the academy and on the EVOC track. I bet if we had a few restored CHP mustangs and presented the idea to them, they'd have a day for them at the academy.
I don't think too many people in the department realize how many are out there and the interest in them.

I do know that the EVOC instructors would LOVE to drive them if they showed up lol.
Just a thought. I know I am intent on finding an in service picture of my car.
It would be neat to have a photo of the car for the vin project, and I know everyone that owns a CHP SSP would love to have an in service picture of their car as well.
What do you think ?

John, I think it's a good idea to pool our resources to come up with likely E-plate ranges for each year. There will certainly be oddballs thrown in the mix though. I was searching the smog site today and in a batch of likely Mustang plates I turned up a Sierra 1500. Obviously, unit numbers were "randomly organized" (kinda like the phrase "jumbo shrimp").

Default A bunch of 93 SSPs this time!

Aaron has continued his work on matching California smog certificates. Using his matches, we grabed screenshots to create the following pages:

http://www.specialservicemustang.net...info111889.htm
http://www.specialservicemustang.net...info111890.htm
http://www.specialservicemustang.net...info111897.htm
http://www.specialservicemustang.net...info111901.htm
http://www.specialservicemustang.net...info111902.htm
http://www.specialservicemustang.net...info111906.htm
http://www.specialservicemustang.net...info111910.htm
http://www.specialservicemustang.net...info111911.htm
http://www.specialservicemustang.net...info111916.htm

And Bobby found an interesting SSP for sale on Atlanta Craigslist, which is now added to our VIN Project:

http://www.specialservicemustang.net...info210457.htm

This SSP is from the Carolinas, but the agency documentation is weak for the cars listed in this DSO (#21-0820). Regardless, it is a true SSP and currently holds the distinction of being the last SSP in the final year of production that we have documented so far (i.e. the highest VIN in '93). We are not saying it is the last SSP built by Ford, but it is one of the last ones no doubt.

THANKS GUYS!

I checked and mac88chp has that picture in his fotki album:

http://public.fotki.com/Classicchp/v...p1992smpv.html

I would rather use his picture instead of one from the other site. (note, if you look at the description under his picture, Michael had already determined this car's VIN)
