Can an accident report be obtained from a CarFax or AutoCheck report?
If say running a VIN # through CarFax or AutoCheck - and within the report there is an accident event logged and there is a case # listed, is there anyway of obtaining copies of that actual accident report from that time period?
How would one go about trying to do that, as far as who to contact, etc? Also, can copies of past titles be obtained due to what is sometimes listed in a CF or AC report? Sometimes I see that there is a "Title #" next to an event such as registration renewal or when a vehicle switched owners. |

I tried to do something similar on a 1985 CHP Mustang -
There are only a couple of in-service pictures of the 85 SMPV's (Specially Marked Patrol Vehicles), and none of the cars have been found. Seeing the car's tag number, I was able to determine its CHP Unit Number. While asking my contact to check for CHP Assignment Cards on members who had asked, I included that one. Here is a copy of the card I received on #E408445 - So I pulled the VIN from the card (removed from the above pic) and had a CARFAX run. It showed an accident about 10 years ago in New Mexico, and listed the date and report number. I contacted the County and State about getting a copy of the accident report to see who owned it at the time, but came up empty. Too bad - the car hasn't been tagged in a while and is probably rotting away.

Now that's pretty cool...and shows that the car was used for more that Comm. Enf.
The U/C plates are a good clue.
