Default pen writing on door sticker question and paint removal from another sticker

Hello all!!

on my 86 ssp, it's got in handwriting

"tires 13187"

now, what is that?? is that a part # for the tires for the agency, or the unit #??

as well, there is another sticker above the door sticker, but it's been painted over. Is there any safe way to remove paint without destroying stickers??

You should have a 4 digit unit number on the door....above or below the door data sticker. CHP used a paint pen, and they were usually painted over when they retired the cars. You should still able to be read it if you look closely.

As for the writing you mentioned...no idea. Got a pic of it?

I chipped the paint from my '83 DPS sticker....it had been completely painted over, and I used a screwdriver to start, then my fingernails when I got to the sticker. I didn't want to risk using any solvents and damaging the sticker.

chipping the paint is a great idea...I'll try that.

I'll snap a pic of the writing. A member on FEP suggested it could be a date, 13187...possible I suppose.

I want to take more pics, but the car is at my pops house 45 miles away, and I'm flying out of state this weekend for a wedding

next weekend after that I suppose..... I'm meeting up with him VERY soon to go over the whole car mechanically...so I'll take in depth day pics then. I may pull the seats and carpet out and hunt for that all elusive build sheet.

That's the only place I've seen for the unit number.

I've had pretty good luck finding the build sheets behind the rear, interior trim pieces. On the '82 CHP, it was still taped up (drivers side). The '83 TX car had also been on the drivers side, but it had fallen down and I could see the printer paper sticking out when I pulled up the rear seat bottom. The '83 CSP car was the same...sticking out on the passenger side, though, when I pulled up the rear seat. Funny thing about that one...it was the rotation number next to my car (a non-v8 coupe). I went back the next day and found the one for the car still taped up (they had been stuck together when the car was built).

It's a long shot but ID#s have occasionally been found written in wax pencil or crayon on front license plate holders also. These were temporary markings put on before the car headed down the CHP assembly line to ensure each car got the right plate attached but they haven't been consistently used at all. Pull off the front plate and check there too.
