Default Black spotlights

My car had the more unusual H-1 5" black round spotlight, rather than the 4x6 rectangle. I do not see our version of the 5" offered, and have not seen any used ones for sale. I have located a chrome, though. How difficult would it be to paint the chrome, or have it powdercoated? Would it be a long term solution, or flake off shortly after installation?

The one on my 1990 MSHP SSP was chrome painted black. The story as I understand it is the assigned Trooper did this to the SSP. I don't believe the spotlight that is presently on the car is the original one. I'm thinking that Unmrkd (Gregg) may have been the prior owner that put the paint on the spotlight currently on the car, but I'm not positive. If that is the case, he may be able to give you some input. I can tell you whomever did it, executed a quality job painting it black, and no signs of flaking or any other concerns. Good luck!

The spotlight was black when I purchased P-162 from David P. He told me it was black when he purchased it. I don't know if it got a re-paint or replacement between the MSHP and David. When I took the car to MSHP HQ in 2009 Capt Jamerson (original trooper assigned) stated that he had painted the spotlight himself.

That spotlight had always been a mystery to that point as all the other known '90 models had chrome spotlights. SOOOO a new mystery begins - when (if ever) did that spotlight get a re-paint???????

Thanks for describing the timeline Gregg...it looks so good, I figured it had been a more recent paint job than what you have described. It has certainly held up very well.

How easy are they to disassemble to paint the bulb housing? Was the swivel area painted, too, or chrome?

I believe the CHP "black" housings are actually brass? Can anyone confirm this?
