Default Buck tag restoration

What's the proper way to restore the buck tags off my car? I've cleaned them up and got several layers of paint off them. Were they placed on the car before any paint was applied and it's just overspray that's on them? Should the back sides be bare and free of paint? I thought about just neatly painting them with a rattle can of the proper Duplicolor gloss black paint for now.

Recommendations? It will be a while before the whole car is stripped and painted. But I want to get these back on it.

Greg

I'm sure they were put on after the body shell came back from being welded together. Then as they went down the line certain workers knew what the car needed to have. They would have just been painted on the car when the engine bay was painted.

Black had no clear in the engine bay, so the paint was thin layer of satin/semi-gloss black.

I'm gonna try to replicate that on my car. Gloss black engine bays just don't look right to me.

My 90 CHP was gloss black inside engine bay. In fact all SSP's with special paint that I've seen had far better coverage in engine bay than the basic paint cars did. Plus these cars were still single stage, not base coat clear. So what ever received paint was glossy just coverage varied. Satin black would be incorrect. IMO...

No clear was used until around 1990, and only then on certain colors.

The silver clearcoat metallic '93 I have in my garage, which I bought new, has a grey engine compartment. It's a totally different color than what's on the body panels.

Yeah, I thought it was the same paint, just without the clearcoat. As I recall, my 2001 Bullitt was the first to get the engine bay clearcoated.
