That white 92 SMPV was 109th unit after my SSP I am restoring.
I wonder if it was a 93.
The plate on that one reads 895310 if I am reading it correctly.

I am pretty sure that 1992 had plates starting with 38 and 93 had 88 looking at pictures.

The 93's in the inservice section have 88 as the first two of the plate, and 92's had plates ranging in the 389000+ area, like my dads is 389042.

Your car is confusing me John, as IIRC, it had a build date that would make it a 93, but your paperwork had 1992.

While I was writing this, I did a little more looking, and found some more 89 plates on Mustangs in my Motor Transport Mustangs thread. But then I realized, the 89 plates were for 1994! All of the 94 Caprices have 89xxxx plates

Still confused on why 92 Mustangs would have them, unless they were equipped in late 93??? John's could have gotten lumped in with the batch of 93's that were being equipped? Then 93's that got equipped in 1994 would get the 89 plate?

These are the 89 plate numbered Mustangs I have seen
895201
895310(SMPV, I have pictures of the car at MT)
895400
895216
895392
895250
895254
895309(SMPV)
895338

Pretty much CHP had 88xxxx for 1993, 89xxxx for 1994, and 90xxxx for 1995.

Might just be rambling on here, but I felt the need to investigate

The '93s were issued plates in both the 88xxxx and 89xxxx series. I have confirmed several '93s by VIN# that had 89xxxx plates. This makes differentiating '92s and '93s a bit dicey to ID from the plate alone.

Sam, as Michael said the 2-digit prefix on the CHP unit numbers are not necessarily year-specific. I have seen 38xxxx plates on at least two different model year cars (I haven't had my morning coffee yet, so I forget which years). As a result, I have also seen two cars from the same year having different 2-digit prefixes.

Here is a somewhat related post on the CHP forum -

Here's a photo for sale on ePay of a white one...appears to be diff't plate number than one a few posts earlier. Looks like white overspray under the front bumper.

Jack, aka Va 5.0, sent me this photo, which is a better copy than the one I have seen before. But it certainly belongs in this thread. The car is one number off from my 85 SMPV.

Here is a new photo I found/purchased on ebay of CHP #E408445 (a 1985 SSP) -

This is the only silver & white SMPV (Specially Marked Patrol Vehicle) from the first year (1987) of the pilot program by the California Highway Patrol. To review, the CHP repainted five (5) SSP Mustangs that first year, along with Dodge Diplomats, Crown Victorias, and Chevy Celebrities (15 cars total) for the purpose of stealthy speed enforcement of truckers. This picture is different than the others I have seen, with the shot being closer to the car and at a slightly different angle. The original I received of this photo I more clear than the scanned copy I posted, and it shows one of the special low-profile Show-Off rear deck lights, as well as the relocated antenna on the decklid.
