Would the CHiPs! show have used a real CHP vehicle for the episode, or one that they painted up to look like an in-service vehicle? Wouldn't there have been liability concerns about wrecking a CHP car during a stunt? If it was an actual CHP Mustang, maybe it was the "Police Demo" , which had the GL trim level as I recall.

IIRC, the "demo" car had black interior.
Miami Vice used in-service cars and troopers when they filmed some scenes; can't say the same about CHP. That car sure looks/sounds like an in-service car, though. As for the steering wheel, there's a bazillion in-service pictures that show what the cars came equipped with. Here's an article from Motor Trend in 1982 showing the correct wheel: http://www.motortrend.com/features/a.../photo_03.html The same wheel is also depicted in page 3 of the 1982 Mustang brochure.

The "demo" car had DA interior trim (cloth & vinyl seating, low-back front buckets, Black) originally.
The (non-leather-wrapped) steering wheel shown in post #14 is the Luxury 4-spoke wheel that was standard and available only in GLX coupes and hatchbacks. A leather-wrapped version was optional in all models if cruise control was also optioned. |

Re: the steering wheel - an awful lot of the '82s received field installed "embellishments" including trim rings, pin striping, etc. so the fancy wheel may have been one of those.

What the difference is between the "deluxe" 4-spoke wheel and the "luxury" 4-spoke wheel I do not know. |

I believe that the "luxury" wheel is what came equipped on my '83 TX car. It's the same wheel as the '82 (4 spoke), but the car has cruise, unlike the '82s. The difference between the two is that the outer rim on the '83 has a "woodgrain" insert running around it. The plain wheels do not have this, which I believe are referred to as the "deluxe" wheel. Here is an example of an NOS "luxury" wheel listed on eBay: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Ford-Luxury-...#ht_2406wt_932

Horns were on the steering column (stalk) on cars with those 3-spoke wheels, versus on the steering wheel itself with the others.
