I found out who the two CHP officers who drove CHP 5305 while it was in service. THe first guy to get the car was Ray Faulk who left Santa Cruz in 1997 to goto Auto Theft Task Force. The car was then given to Officer Evan Kapel agin in Santa Cruz. I got a letter in the mail from Evan the other day and I will get it scanned to post up here. He told me about Ray Faulk who I contacted through Facebook last night. Today he sent me this responce..
Re: CHP Mustang #5305 restoration Hey Chris Thanks for the extended response to the conversation I have recently had with Evan concerning the Mustang I drove on the job. I did become a sergeant after working in the auto theft unit and rode a motorcycle for the CHP for5 years now, as a sergeant. I am actually and acting Lt in Santa Cruz on loan from Monterey right now. That was the last patrol car I drove as an officer before going undercover as an investigator. It did in fact have radar equipment installed in it as I was the radar coordinator and often ran special enforcement units using a radar device that was hardwired into that car. Concerning the damage, I was sitting along side State Route 17 at Sims Rd. on the shoulder just prior to the off ramp one morning at about 0600 hrs when a young man lost control of his vehicle and crashed into the rear of the Mustang. I was injured in the collision, but more importantly, the vehicle was repaired and put back into service where it remained until Evan ran it out (100,000 miles). I may have some old photos of it that I will attempt to locate. You would probably enjoy them. Let me know what else you need to know and I will attempt to dredge it up from the memory banks. Thanks for the note. Let me know Ray-------------------- |
