Default 1989 Minnesota State Patrol SSP Mustang Dark Shadow Blue Metallic

Regrettably I am placing my super rare 1989 Minnesota State Patrol SSP Mustang up for sale. The sale is actually prompted by something good, but I won’t share details for a couple weeks. Given all of the research I have done on Minnesota SSPs, my loss will be someone else's gain. I'll do my best to describe in detail...contact me w/questions. Photos, documentation, etc. available on my Fotki http://public.fotki.com/MOstang/must...ord-ssp-musta/

This rare 1 of 20 Minnesota procured 1989 Special Service Package Mustang was originally purchased, owned and in-service with the Minnesota State Patrol (MNSP). It is the only returned to in-service MNSP SSP of the 20 SSPs Minnesota purchased in 1989, which represents the only year they bought SSP Mustangs. This vehicle comes with original documentation proving the provenance (MN Motor Vehicle Registration) as an original MNSP Mustang. It has been accurately returned to in-service appearance as a show car. The exterior color is Dark Shadow Blue Metallic and includes a factory light blue pin stripe, while the interior color is Regatta Blue.

This SSP was in-service with the MNSP from 1989 to April 1993 and is a real survivor. I am only aware of 3 others and this is only one that has been returned to in-service specs. One is owned by an SSP forum member, other owned by an individual and I have photos, with the remaining being owned by an individual who has contacted me but has yet to produce any photographic and/or VIN number evidence of the vehicle. The original plate number was 828-CNF, which expired 3/31/90. Its’ second license plate number was 763-HJV. In May, 2010 I became the fourth civilian owner of this 104,467 mile SSP Mustang when I purchased it from another forum member. Since my ownership began I have returned this SSP to MNSP in-service appearance.

My contact with the Minnesota State Patrol, who operates a website dedicated to the history of MNSP vehicles, has shared with me what he believes to be the lineage of my vehicles time in service. The following summarizes that information. Originally assigned to Trooper Suzanne Hackett (out of Hastings 2410), who retired at the rank of Lieutenant. The second and last assignment was to Captain Don Kunelius who was Fleet Administrator. Don then transferred to the Commercial Vehicle Section. He continued to drive the Mustang for a while until the new Fleet Administrator said it was time for it to go. It then went off to auction at Fort Snelling in April 1993 with 88,000 miles on the odometer. Less than 20,000 miles have been placed on the odometer since that time.

Extras: Vehicle will come with one of my originally authored 25 color page Minnesota State Patrol SSP Mustang History & Restoration Guidebooks. Includes reproduction license plates (front and back). Binder that includes all documentation/etc including vehicle and dealer information card proving provenance; original owners guide; color 1989 Ford SSP dealer brochure.

Interior: Regatta Blue cloth interior / dash is black and blue. Interior is in excellent condition. Dash has some outline of where the custom radar bracket was installed (see electronics section below). Power doors/locks. 1 key works everything; relocated trunk release where you'd expect. A prior owner needed to replace the speedo and it was done with a 140 MPH one. Based upon speedo certification cards my best guess is that was done in 1996.

Exterior: Dark Shadow Blue Metallic with a factory light blue pin stripe. Brand new Michelin tires were purchased and installed this summer. I have the correct magnetic backed MNSP emblem to apply for car shows. The MNSP utilized semi-marked SSP Mustangs. In this case, the MNSP utilized a traditional door emblem on the passenger side only. Body is straight...no issues with the panels. I am continually amazed at the condition of this SSP given where it served. It was clearly well taken care of and I believe the nature of the last assignment helped preserve it so well. Photos just do not do it justice.

Mechanical: Mileage at this time is 104,467. Buck tags are present and stapled in the usual place. This SSP offers a nice smooth and enjoyable ride. It appears to be a very original 5.0 engine. 4-speed automatic transmission. I drove this vehicle 12 hours from Northern Wisconsin here to Metro Detroit Michigan with absolutely no problems.

Electronics: Electronics are functionally wired into the vehicle and includes a hidden disconnect switch in the trunk for safe driving. Vehicle electronics include the following: actual inventory tagged Minnesota State Patrol GE Delta VHF radio; Motorola MX-350 VHF handheld radio; Motorola PAC/RT UHF repeater; Sti-Co adapter; GE CB radio & hideaway antenna; Uniden scanner; two (2) triple red light sticks; Sho-Me/No-Sho Red Grill lights; Show-Me/Able 2 headlight and flashback flashers; Federal Signal siren; PA300 siren control box; Sho-Me/Able 2 switch box. Brand of triple red light sticks MNSP utilized are obsolete. Therefore, I obtained the closest example I could find (happens to be LED) in order to provide essential visual representation. Also included is MPH K55 radar, however, it isn’t installed. I now have details on how they installed custom brackets. It will be easy for buyer to replicate. I do have a single 12 volt electrical connector installed so radar can be plugged in. Pictures available on my Fotki site (link top of listing) depicting what/how items are presently mounted.

I am listing here for sale at $11,900, which is less than I have invested into this SSP Mustang. You also get to enjoy the fruits of the many hours I’ve spend researching and documenting these vehicles. While I need to sell this SSP, I'm not in a big hurry to do so and would be happy to continue enjoying it for awhile. I have had a great deal of fun researching and working on this SSP. It is important for me to see this remain in the community of the forum and hopefully it will work out that way. I will remain a resource to whomever buys this SSP; working with them to update a Volume 2 of my Guidebook while continuing my research of Minnesota State Patrol SSP Mustangs.

This is a beautiful turnkey SSP you can purchase and enjoy today. The other great thing about it is how simple to drive on the road given how stealth oriented the MNSP appearance and equipment setup was on Mustangs. Thank you for looking and feel free PM me with any questions or email to ann_mike_patterson@msn.com (by the way those are underscores between the names in my email address). I will list it for sale on eBay this Sunday.

Thumbs up

congratulations on the other good news and good luck with the sale of this rare ssp. You have done a great job putting the car back to in service condition and hopefully the next owner will appreciate the car and give it a good home.

That's a great, unique, and well-documented SSP you've got there Mike. Good luck with the sale, and look forward to hearing more about the reason behind the sale!
