My father and I will be putting a paint job on the 86 ssp sometime next year, hopefully early.
At first, I was thinking a black and white restoration, but now we're looking at the fact that it may be too flashy and get the wrong attn on the street, and that an all black paint job may look better. we're still doing a resto from the ssp wheels, to stock interior, and trying and locating much of the gear for a car show. we'll put the spot lamps on too, my question here, is how many others have done basic restorations on their car, but went with a solid tone paint job instead?

Color is certainly a personal preference. I "prefer" to keep the car the same as it was when it roled of the assembly line.
Good luck!!! Barry

Paint it black. You can always paint the white areas of the car later.

If it is the only car you have paint it one color and do the rest of the resto to the point where equipment can be removed easily and put back to look stock. I believe CHP had an all blue with black letters type car that was used for only traffic enforcement. Check with the CHP guys here. Maybe you can go that route and just place the letters on magnets when at a show.

Another vote for all black from me, if you or your father are going to be driving it.
If not driving, I'd go back to B&W. ![]() CA law prohibits the B&W paint scheme on the street (I think specifically white doors), but one of the CA guys should be able to clarify that for you.

You can go black with a white roof but adding white doors with any black body is a big no-no for anything used as a driver. White doors with other colors can also get you negative attention, especially if there is any LE type equipment visible (spotlights, antenna, ect.).
