Default 85-86 SSP Escort cap modification

For those who are tired of looking for the unicorn of Ford parts, the 85-86 SSP center caps, I might have a solution for you. I experimented with damaged Escort caps first and here is what I found works. You can do this with a Dremel tool too, but I am lucky to access to a lathe, so I used the lathe!

I put the Escort cap in the lathe, I cut the cap off the “snout” at the parting line, so I could get the cut as level as possible.

Then I used a 2”x1.5” PVC coupling and put that in the lathe. I measure to the ¾” space needed for the SSP hub. I then cut the coupling down and allowed for ¼” shoulder in the coupling. This let me center the spacer in the snout.

Some epoxy to hold the spacer to the snout and then epoxy to hold the cap to the spacer. Some body filler in the gaps and sand smooth. Argent paint and you should have some very usable SSP caps.

I would be willing to make a pair of spacers for those who want to convert some Escort caps for their SSP, just let me know.
