Tag number

Michael C. can you tell me what my tag number was for my 88 CHP unit #2934? I finally got it home & want to get it registered but need to know the tag number. Also, on my 86 CHP there was a sticker on the drivers door with the inservice date on it but the 88 doesn't have that. Did they put it somewhere else on the car? Your very informed on the CHP cars so I figured you would know these things. Thanks, Doug

I think it would have been 422934. Mike C. put out a list of the different years/prefixes awhile back, but I can't seem to find it.

Dang, I can't find my list either! :o

But I've got the list of plate numbers for all the '87s and 422934 is on there so your '88 has to have had 432934. I'm pretty sure the '88s got tags in around the 4328XX-4330XX range but I'll have to find the list to confirm that.

The in-service date labels were generally applied somewhere on the lower left portion of the dash on most vehicles, including the Mustangs up to '86. Here's one from an '82:

Once the dash design changed with the '87s, they moved the label location to the left side of the dash, the portion that is up against the door panel. Here's a shot of a '93 for sale taken on the CHP lot:

I found glue residue in that location on my car but the label was long gone so, for my car at least, either the CHP removed it prior to sale or most likely it just fell off at some point during the nearly 12 years they had it. I'll bet it's the same case for your '88, it either fell off or was removed, most likely by a previous owner.

The interior in my car is gone including the dash. What ever the inservice date was I'll never know. I bought the car back in March and finally got the time and money to make the 1000 mile round trip to pick it up. It's pretty rough but worth saving to me. I'm going to use it for a daily driver since my 88 FHP has been strictly a show car the last few years. I sure miss driving one on a daily basis. Here's a couple pics. I have everything I need to put it back in shape so it's not going to be an expensive project just time consuming. Thanks Mike & Michael for all your help. Doug

Doug,

I have the same paperwork for the '87s (Jim Y. got it from Motor Transport), and like Mike C. says, 422934 is in there, with the VIN. I don't see them assigning the same unit number to another car, though. Maybe yours sat for awhile before being put into service? Can you verify the last 6 of the VIN?

CHP 3705 11-03-2007 01:55 PM

The last 6 digits are 221412. The DSO is 72 0047. Production date is 3-88. Doug

Last 6 of the '87 are 184806. Maybe your car sat and replaced this '87? There are some memos in the stack that say that the Mustangs were in high demand, though.

Yep Mike, Jim Y.'s paperwork is my source. Too bad we don't have the same for the '88s!

You may be onto something, according to its Assignment Card, my car replaced an '87 - ID #422955. (Does your '87 paperwork show where 422955 was assigned?). My car was assigned to Bakersfield and Central Division units tend to rack up miles fast patrolling the long stretches of I-5 and SR-99.

For comparison to Doug's car, here's the data for mine:

Last 6 VIN - 221454

Build Date - 3/88

In-Service Date - 12/5/88

Out of Patrol Service - 4/13/90

The only lists I have are for the '89-'90s. The '89 plates start with 433046 and end at 435300 (not all are consecutive). It looks like the latest any of the '89s went into service was 08/1990. The '90 list is incomplete (as far as the number of units in-service, since the memo was written 10/1990), but those plates are 38 prefixes.

I have the original civie plates & a couple of registration certificates that came with the car if that helps. This car was registered in Ca. until 2004 when Don picked it up. If there's an oddball to be had, I usually end up with it. It's like my 86 CHP, the DSO code on the buck tag is different from the one on the Vin sticker. Doug
