I didn't expect it to be that simple.
Th car has an inspection sticker from 89'
so it made it til then at least.

Thanks so much for that report.
Ted

ChrisL 01-29-2012 09:28 PM

Do we have new pictures yet? :) And a full story! We gotta hear the details!

Its quiet a mess to be completely honest. Everything from the firewall back looks pretty decent with the exception of the rear floor pans. There are gaping holes. The front end is another story. The frame rails and EVERYTHING hooked to them is toast. I found the build sheet remnants under the carpet beneath the pedal assembly. Parts of it are legible but its toast. I was able to locate the original keys tucked inside the fuel fill door. Yes keys, two. :(
Some of the wiring for the front red and blue lights is still there and i found an original aluminum bracket for the front lights. I also found a broken mic for a cobra radio. The black and white paint breaks are there and still crisp. Hood grounding straps are there and i found the trunk straps in the trunk. The motor is completely intact and would clean up well if it werent for the rust on the heads and block. Its still full of oil. There is also still washer fluid in the reservoir. Its crazy. Its awesome to be able to see them in original format. The thing that baffles me the most is the spotlight handles. Near about all the cars out there and this one have the spotlight handle upwards which really makes it difficult to operate.
Its gonna be an absolute nightmare to bring back. Im a little nervous about dumping a ton of money into it. I have to investigate a bunch more.

GSPI 01-29-2012 11:18 PM

That is a project. So what's on the agenda for this car?

texunter 01-29-2012 11:30 PM

I will have to do some further investigating to see if it's fixable and if so, I'm gonna attempt to restore it. I've been looking for a car with these particular options for awhile now. Until I can find another one, this is it.

1989 Tx DPS SSP 01-29-2012 11:35 PM

I think enough of us here could come up with the parts to help in the resto. It would be neat if that motor would fire up after all of these years. Could you read the tag on the door janm to get the Unit # ?

Tom

texunter 01-29-2012 11:49 PM

Unfortunately there is only a small remnants of the unit number. It looks to have literally baked off from the sun. If the doors had not been removed, it would have survived. :(

ChrisL 01-29-2012 11:52 PM

I'm very glad you pulled it out of there Ted, pretty neat to see one in such original form. I'm really impressed you found so much original equipment laying around in it as well! That is super cool! Keep us updated with pictures, and whatever you find. I hope you decide to restore it, but I bet there would be someone here willing to take on the project even if you don't.

Mustang Kid 01-30-2012 12:54 AM

Man, that is awesome:2thumbs:
I would love to restore something like that. I would say that is just as bad as my 84 GT. Don't be worried about the whole inner front clip, cause you can find a clip off a standard coupe and have a frame shop straighten everything and put the new clip on. That's what I have to do with my 84.
Can't wait to see more pics/progress :)

texunter 01-30-2012 10:59 AM

Here are some pics of the front light bracket on the bumper.

ChrisL 01-30-2012 11:04 AM

Ted, are you sure that the part that you have angled down, doesn't go back behind the bumper and attach to the core support? The way the lights mount, they look as if they are designed to "hang" from a flat surface. So I can't see with that bracket pointed down like that exactly how they would mount on there... Thoughts?

texunter 01-30-2012 11:46 AM

Yes Chris you are correct. There are holes on the radiator support that match with the angled part of the bracket. Sorry for the confusion.

Can someone remove those pics for me because they are not correct.
Ted

ChrisL 01-30-2012 11:53 AM

Awesome Ted! I wonder if those extra holes do line up with the place you've got it bolted to keep it held down to the bumper cover. That would make sense. Does the bracket tie in where the radiator support clamps bolt on?

Took care of it. Please post up more once you get them spun around, though. Good stuff.

texunter 01-30-2012 12:51 PM

Thanks Evil.

I put the front bumper back on and verified the mounting holes. The support is bent but they line up. The driver side bracket utilizes the radiator support to bumber cover bracket. The passenger side is not in the correct spot to utilize that bracket so they made their own holes.
Here you go.

Thanks Ted!

Also, you might send a PM to GSPI about the door jam sticker. He has a lot of super-cool detective tricks to figure out what was glued/stuck to something. I bet he has a trick for figuring out the door jamb sticker. Because it was one of those labels, there wouldn't have been adhesive where the letters and number were. So if you can use a UV light, or something like that, there should be a way to see only the adhesive there... and thus the negative for the unit number. Hopefully he chimes in here...

texunter 01-30-2012 01:06 PM

Nice thinking!

I used it to read the buildsheet better

I have said light here in my toolbox....

ChrisL 01-30-2012 01:17 PM

Keep us posted! Maybe dust it with some chalk too?

texunter 01-30-2012 01:19 PM

I can see the M6 but the rest is shiny black.

ChrisL 01-30-2012 01:32 PM

I wonder if you could dust it with something, or if there would be a way to "lift it" Maybe even a light pencil over paper would show something?

28HopUp 01-30-2012 01:49 PM

I added this one to our VIN Project :D

http://www.specialservicemustang.net...info231686.htm

There are two other TxDPS cars with the same DSO in the consecutive list of 10 VIN's.

1989 Tx DPS SSP 01-30-2012 10:14 PM

Teddy, Look behind the drivers side panel to see if there might be an additional Build sheet.

Tom

texunter 01-30-2012 10:32 PM

That's the only pieces I have not removed. That would be great!
Thanks!!

Yes, that is correct. UV lighting helps in identifying problems with adhesives and plastic labels that have been glued over things in a car...which is used in identifying fraudulent labels on ID tags for cars when they are suspected stolen.

texunter 02-01-2012 01:10 PM

Check this out!

I stared and stared at that number using different lighting with no result.
I could only read the M6-3 . I didnt want to clean it in fear of wiping it off. After so long of being frustrated, I decided to clean it all off and low and behold, the outline of the numbers was a tiny bit more shiny than the surrounding paint. There it was M6-357! I was dancing around the shop!!!

Thankyou Chris for pushing me to look harder!

28HopUp 02-01-2012 01:22 PM

That's awesome! See if you can capture a picture of it...

ChrisL 02-01-2012 02:10 PM

Awesome Ted! That is fantastic news! And now that you mention it, I have your label for your '88 sitting here at my desk. I'll make one up for the '86 and send them both to you.

texunter 02-01-2012 02:12 PM

Sweet! That would be most excellent!

Thanks Chris!

Ill see if i can get a picture of it.

chp1982 02-01-2012 05:25 PM

That is awesome! Glad you found it.

ChrisL 02-01-2012 11:31 PM

Is it restored yet Ted!? I'm ready to see this thing back to life :) Your door labels are ready to go, I'll mail them out tomorrow.

ImEvil1 02-01-2012 11:57 PM

Not sure how I missed this earlier...but congrats!

texunter 02-02-2012 12:45 AM

I sit in it every day like a kid with no license. :)
Today I was sitting in the car and I pulled the passenger sun visor down and there was a quick reference card for a Motorola Syntor X9000!
I guess I'll be looking for one of those.

I can't wait!!
Thanks for all the support y'all!
