1989 Ford Mustang Notchback SSP - $8900 (Rio Grande, NJ)

1989 Ford Mustang LX 5.0 Notchback with 126,000 miles. This is an original SSP car from Texas with buck tags and door jamb info still in place. Factory automatic but currently has a T5 manual in it. White exterior with Regatta Blue interior. Very minimal surface rust and is solid, but does need paint. Interior is in excellent condition. Car has AC but not hooked up and needs heater core. The only aftermarket parts on car are exhaust and gears. Rear deck police lights and antennas are in place. Will also include new parts that are not installed: headlights, cowl vent, shocks, struts, original police radio and spotlight. Most of the SSP cars are destroyed or high end complete restorations. This car runs and drives great it just needs some finish work and paint.
Asking $8900
The seller's contact info is a CL email account, so there is no number to call. Sharp eyes will see that those drag radials indicate the car has been babied.

This car is back up for sale on Craigslist South Jersey. Has anyone found anything about it since it was previously listed?

Cobra Jet 04-06-2020 12:25 AM

There is a roll cage installed in the back and looks like it goes through the rear into trunk, definitely not SSP issued... LOL.

Drag radials for sure. The images don’t look any different from those posted back in Sept 2019...and ad description has not changed either.

a50ina50 04-06-2020 08:24 PM

Cobra Jet, I'm guessing if an SSP Mustang would a correct roll bar then it would only be a loop/2 point and not a 4 point type ?

Depends on the agency. My '83 CSP has a 4 pt (hard to see in the pic)

I forget the agency, but some did have a 2-point bar (loop usually directly behind the driver/pass seats.

The one in the CL ad shows a 4-point mounted in front of the rear seat and going through the interior c-pillar plastics being mounted to or braced onto the trunk wheel wells.

I don’t recall any TX DPS units having 4-point roll bars.

Someone can correct me on the TX DPS statement if I’m wrong and also point you into the right direction of which agencies had 2-point bars.

28HopUp 04-12-2020 04:31 PM

My 1988 Pierce County Sheriff's Dept SSP that I owned had a 2-point rollbar mounted inside the B-pillar. It matched what the WSP units used. I do not have a photo.

I had planned to call the guy and check it out Easter weekend but either he sold it or cancelled the ad.

Here's the ebay link -

https://www.ebay.com/itm/1989-Ford-M...kAAOSwcwRewggc

Attached are pics of the Buck Tags, which come back as a likely TxDPS (although it MAY have been ordered for any agency in Texas). The current seller says that there is agency info in the doorjam, which could confirm it as a TxDPS if he's talking about the unit number sticker. This car is already in our VIN Project -

I saw this on Ebay today also. The initial person that had posted it on South Jersey Craigslist 2 times lives in Rio Grande/Wildwood NJ. Which is about 2 hours from me. I had intended to contact the seller and look at it on Easter weekend. However it was sold/taken down before I had a chance to contact the seller. The current seller, I believe it is a new owner, lives in Pitman NJ. Which is less than an hour from me.
The car looks like it has new headlights, marker lights and new tires. Old ad said it need a/c work and a heater core. Ebay ad says he di a/c work and replaced the heater core.
I will try and call the guy tomorrow and go look at it this weekend.

maxwedge5281 What kind of information did the seller give you?

28HopUp 05-18-2020 11:47 PM

Check in the parts section to see if the wheels/tires are from the same guy as the eBay auction.

89 ssp

he was very open about the car. the discussion was very similar to his ebay info....but I did not ask about the roll bar and there was no mention of a transmission change in the car....I believe the ad said something about it being an automatic originally. he did mention buying it from someone in new jersey. seems he has corrected some or most of the problems with the car. no discussion of the drag radials which he has replaced with speed rated tires. he did say the car was loud and no cats on the car. we did discuss the paint which is peeling in places as mentioned in the ad....that seems to be the most glaring problem with the car. he did not have any history of the car from its service in texas???

maxwedge5281 05-19-2020 10:09 PM

I was looking at the car seriously but bought a 93 ssp postal inspector car....

Did you buy the blue one that was recently for sale? Be sure to create a thread in the Members' Ride section about your new SSP.

28HopUp 05-20-2020 10:27 AM

Congrats! Will you be taking it to PITS2020? I/we are planning to attend as spectators.

thank you. I will not be going this year. I am posting a pic of the door tag....

a50ina50 05-22-2020 09:03 PM

I ran the VIN on CARFAX today. It doesn't show who the initial registered owner was. It does show a title number for the initial owner but who knows if Texas DMV records go back that far.

Would it increase/decrease the value of an SSP Mustang if it was initially sold to the public and never purchased and up fitted with emergency equipment by a law enforcement agency?

Cobra Jet 05-25-2020 01:05 AM

So who won it for $12.5k?

No confirmed TX DPS history and it went for that much?

What TX Highway Patrols ran rear roll bars? I don’t recall seeing any TX units with a roll bar. Even went into the old TX DPS site linked through this site and there’s no mention of TX units running roll bars... or any pics.

ImEvil1 05-26-2020 09:00 AM

It looks like someone spray painted the entire underside of the car.

Yes, same thoughts when I had viewed the eBay pics. Also, seller mentions the “clear is bad”, but from what I see, the entire car was painted white at some point, because with the doors open, all of the latch mechanisms, bolts/screws, VIN decals, etc. are all painted over. I understand if this was an actual DPS unit it would have been painted for auction, but this would need quite a bit of time to clean up.

I can’t believe it actually sold for $12.5k... guess we’ll see if it really sold, or if it gets popped back up on eBay.

a50ina50 10-11-2020 08:11 PM

AAAAAnnnnndd....its on Ebay. Current owner is from Kentucky. I messaged him through Ebay. I told him that I was from NJ and saw it for sale by the 2 previous owner's (from NJ also) and that I missed those opportunities. He stated he did by the car from a guy in NJ. He said he ran across another mustang that he wants but doesn't have room for both.
https://www.ebay.com/itm/1989-Ford-M...%7C1000%7C2500
One of things I noticed is that the current ad states it has 114,428 miles. The posting of the Craigslist ad from 09/2019 says it has 126,000 miles.
Yes I am a little nervous to try and buy it again.

28HopUp 11-08-2020 05:14 PM

It's again relisted with a BIN price of $19K -

https://www.ebay.com/itm/1989-Ford-M...sAAOSwuwdfgzuu

(same seller as the last listing)

Cobra Jet 11-17-2020 10:59 PM

And it’s still sitting at that price point.

So, can anyone give info as to which TX DPS units ran rear roll bars? Is that fact, or added after it’s in-service life? I just don’t see any mention of TX DPS units coming equipped with or having such installed when reviewing tons of TX DPS links through this site and other online searches.

Mike, how are you able to distinguish this as an 84 and not an 83? I'm not doubting you; just wanna learn.

ImEvil1 12-01-2020 02:08 PM

It's an '83 mislabeled on the site (in the DPS section). My mistake when I copied it over and didn't really pay attention. 84's had the bright mirrors and trim along the rockers.

This was actually Trooper Pruett's '83. Here is another pic provided by him. http://www.specialservicemustang.net...X/83DPDPS2.jpg

Thanks Mike. The 83 and 84 TxDPS cars are so similar in appearance.

It’s back again....

Can anyone supply any additional info about this one by what is seen in the BUC tags?

Did TX have white unmarked DEA SSP’s as seller is claiming?

28HopUp 01-14-2021 01:25 PM

This has a better pic of the Buck Tags:
