http://images38.fotki.com/v1220/phot...1010448-vi.jpg Oh, and if your Nevada car runs, clean it up and bring it to enter in the daily driver class. Everybody loved seeing my in-progress car the four times I showed it there prior to getting it "finished*". * They never truly are you know. |
That SMPV would be a cool one to see returned to in-service condition.

Assuming this is another angle of the same/or similar white CHP SSP?

http://images116.fotki.com/v709/phot...92_smpv-vi.jpg Isn't it interesting to note that when they repainted the later cars into SMPVs (all of them in an overall white scheme), they left the beltline mouldings black even though technically they should have gone white also to emulate the monocromatic look of the '92 and up models. :) |
Question: the seller I got my items from said his car was white. I believe he still has the trunk and the underside is also white. On a repaint, would they have bothered to spray the underside?

"One Day" would paint everything but the engine bay. To see if a car was an SMPV, you would need to have the unit # to get the assignment card. Assignment card is really the only way to confirm. |

As for Ripon I would love to bring my car. I need to put a clutch in it first. |

That white 92 SMPV was 109th unit after my SSP I am restoring.
I wonder if it was a 93. The plate on that one reads 895310 if I am reading it correctly. |
Quote:
The 93's in the inservice section have 88 as the first two of the plate, and 92's had plates ranging in the 389000+ area, like my dads is 389042. Your car is confusing me John, as IIRC, it had a build date that would make it a 93, but your paperwork had 1992. While I was writing this, I did a little more looking, and found some more 89 plates on Mustangs in my Motor Transport Mustangs thread. But then I realized, the 89 plates were for 1994! All of the 94 Caprices have 89xxxx plates:D Still confused on why 92 Mustangs would have them, unless they were equipped in late 93??? John's could have gotten lumped in with the batch of 93's that were being equipped? Then 93's that got equipped in 1994 would get the 89 plate? These are the 89 plate numbered Mustangs I have seen 895201 895310(SMPV, I have pictures of the car at MT) 895400 895216 895392 895250 895254 895309(SMPV) 895338 Pretty much CHP had 88xxxx for 1993, 89xxxx for 1994, and 90xxxx for 1995. Might just be rambling on here, but I felt the need to investigate :D |
mine is 895333 and it was built 10/92
|
The '93s were issued plates in both the 88xxxx and 89xxxx series. I have confirmed several '93s by VIN# that had 89xxxx plates. This makes differentiating '92s and '93s a bit dicey to ID from the plate alone.

Sam, as Michael said the 2-digit prefix on the CHP unit numbers are not necessarily year-specific. I have seen 38xxxx plates on at least two different model year cars (I haven't had my morning coffee yet, so I forget which years). As a result, I have also seen two cars from the same year having different 2-digit prefixes.
Here is a somewhat related post on the CHP forum - http://www.chpforums.com/forum/showt...399#post104399 |
Here's a photo for sale on ePay of a white one...appears to be diff't plate number than one a few posts earlier. Looks like white overspray under the front bumper.

Jack, aka Va 5.0, sent me this photo, which is a better copy than the one I have seen before. But it certainly belongs in this thread. The car is one number off from my 85 SMPV. :)

Here is a new photo I found/purchased on ebay of CHP #E408445 (a 1985 SSP) -
http://www.specialservicemustang.net...234921pic2.jpg This is the only silver & white SMPV (Specially Marked Patrol Vehicle) from the first year (1987) of the pilot program by the California Highway Patrol. To review, the CHP repainted five (5) SSP Mustangs that first year, along with Dodge Diplomats, Crown Victorias, and Chevy Celebrities (15 cars total) for the purpose of stealthy speed enforcement of truckers. This picture is different than the others I have seen, with the shot being closer to the car and at a slightly different angle. The original I received of this photo I more clear than the scanned copy I posted, and it shows one of the special low-profile Show-Off rear deck lights, as well as the relocated antenna on the decklid. |
SWEET !:D
|
Man, that's great Bill!! What are the odds huh?? Good ol' ebay!! :D
Did they change out spots also? Looks like 5" chrome spots from the pic?? |
Quote:
Yes, on those first-year SMPVs the CHP switched out the 6" black-headed spotlights for 5" ones, and painted them body color for a more stealthy appearance. |

Brad, I also received a copy of that color photo of E408445 (which is the sister to mine - E408383)

This one is the final SSP Mustang to roll through CHP Motor Transport -
http://www.specialservicemustang.net...189095pic1.jpg I saw in my notes that the car's unit number is E881517 (is that right, MikeC?). If so, then we know the VIN of this car though our collective efforts in the VIN Project: http://www.specialservicemustang.net...info189095.htm Since adding it to the Project, this car was last smogged in October 2013. It's still on the road gentlemen, and may end up on Craigslist/eBay someday. ;) |
Sweet !!!!
That'd be a cool car to restore :2thumbs: |

Here's the "fractured" version of that photo event that hangs at Motor Transport and commemorates all the physical sacrifice the staff made while equipping the Mustang fleet: :) http://media.fotki.com/1_p,sbwbfktsg...SC00403-vi.jpg BTW, the owner of the "Last Mustang" knows exactly what he has so if it ever shows up for sale don't expect any bargains. |
That's awesome, Michael! Now that you've confirmed its unit number, I will update the car's page in our VIN Project. :)

I knew you were the one to ask. Now that the remaining CHP Assignment Cards have been destroyed :(, it will next to impossible to match the VINs to unit numbers. So being able to confirm any more CHP cars like this will be 'bonus'!

Rob N. now owns the 1985 CHP Mustang that had been owned by Jim B. up until last year as I recall. Rob recently shared an in-service photo on FB that I had never seen before of E408382, which is the second photo displayed below. The first photo was posted up of the same car earlier in this thread, but in an entirely different situation. :)

Darryl Lindsay shared two photos on FB of the single 1984 CHP Specially Marked Patrol Vehicle (SMPV) that was used in the first phase of the program. The rest of the SMPV Mustangs were 1985 models that first time.
