Was lucky enough to bump into Mr.Marti this past summer at Woodward...he helped me decode our 93 SSP a bit further....

28HopUp 10-15-2015 04:57 PM

Very cool! I appreciate you sharing that because you've got my mind spinning now.

TWOCARNUTS 10-15-2015 05:38 PM

I bet!! Folks may truly not realize how rare these cars are....

I can hear Mike Joy at Barrett-Jackson referencing this in no time...

Does your car have articulated sport seats?

Thanks...was wondering about that. It's another one of those mistakes in the Ford database. For whatever reason, many of the GSA-ordered cars did get those articulated seats, but I've seen those with the low-backs also.

Strange indeed.....base seats but a power drivers seat and full power options.....nuts

kapracing 10-15-2015 09:12 PM

How exactly are the #'s broken down? There are at least 2 other calypso SSP's in 93 (Rome/ Floyd county and Gilcrest county)... Just curious. Nice car BTW!

kapracing 10-15-2015 09:15 PM

I'm guessing it's of the 18 calypso coupe with blk int it's the only SSP because the other 2 SSP calypso coupes have gray??? So how would you find out how many of the 93 calypso coupes were SSP's???

TWOCARNUTS 10-15-2015 09:31 PM

Great question.....to date I know of the two cars you mentioned as well as possibly 3....2 for sure FHP unmarked cars...all to the best of my knowledge had Opal interiors and crank windows. ...as for how many of the 93 were SSP versions I'm thinking not too many..

ImEvil1 10-15-2015 10:02 PM

Unfortunately, a lot of the later SSPs in that data incorrectly show the articulated sport seats. I'm guessing that when those seats became standard (with the 5.0 engine), there was never a way to tell when running the reports. We saw the same issue with the earlier cars that have blank paint codes.

FoxChassis 10-16-2015 08:01 AM

Articulated Sport seats were standard in the LX 5.0L coupe starting in 1991. That is why you will always see the A/S code on the door tag, and on Marti reports on the door tag image and in the equipment list.

For special orders, where the build sheet remarks would indicate that the 'base' seats shall be installed, the buck tag will have the non-A/S seat code. In this case the door tag would have a "DJ" (A/S black cloth & vinyl) seat code and the buck tag would have an "FJ" ('base' black cloth) seat code.

FoxChassis 10-16-2015 08:11 AM

On this (elite) report, the stat for the AOD transmission comes first. Therefore, all stats following that one stat are for AOD-equipped cars only. In other words, this 1993 is 1 of 1 with PM paint, DJ (actually FJ) trim, and AOD. There could be one or more 1993 SSP(s) out there with PM/DJ(FJ) and T-5.

FoxChassis 10-16-2015 08:19 AM

There are five (so far) known PM paint SSPs for 1993. The first one (this car) is the only one out of the five that has black interior.

Have you seen build sheets with these remarks in them? I can't remember seeing anything like that. I'm curious as to what the GSA builds say, but I can't remember seeing one of those, either.

FoxChassis 10-16-2015 10:11 AM

Build sheets from aero cars are very scarce. :( I don't recall ever seeing one from a 1991-93 but I would have to check later to be sure if I have any saved.

I am just going off of other (four-eyed) special order sheets that I have seen, from acsMcLarens, Saleens, SSPs, etc., where the remarks mention replacing the standard seats with other seats.

28HopUp 10-16-2015 10:12 AM

On the basis of this report, would I be correct in assuming that Kevin Marti has the ability to separate and quantify the number of cars that came with the SSP option? If so, could anyone offer to pay Marti Auto Works to research the number of 5.0L notchbacks cars that came with the SSP option for each year? Are we really now able to determine how many SSP Mustangs were built? If so, then one of us with a good relationship with Kevin Marti needs to contact him ASAP.

Let me know what you find out, whenever you can. I've never seen anything about the seats down below in the remarks that I can remember (in SSPs only), but maybe it was just a part number mentioned?

I don't think so, Bill. I thought we approached him awhile back on this, and he said that it couldn't be done? Something about the SSP option not being searchable in the database.

FoxChassis 10-16-2015 10:29 AM

Here are just two examples of one trim code on the door tag and a different trim code on the buck tag:

http://www.specialservicemustang.net...info122743.htm
http://www.specialservicemustang.net...info182331.htm

Not sure why "G" code was on the buck tags though. That code hadn't been used since 1989, and then it was for A/S leather seating (convertibles only), not 'base' cloth seating. :headscratch:

I think I have only seen this alternate trim code between the door tag and buck tag in 1991-93, when LX 5.0L sedans were supposed to have a A/S seating standard.

TWOCARNUTS 10-16-2015 10:38 AM

When I approached him regarding a further breakdown of our car he did indicate to me that some of the agencies with specific color requests ie:Michigan and the two tone cars were extremely difficult to breakdown....we on the other hand have this test car and he was intrigued with its status as well as I was.....I don't believe at this time he's opening up the full areo car info to all years but ya never know....

I think they are all like that (later cars). My '93 FHP is, and there are several others listed in the tech section on the site here that show the same codes.

That's because the paint codes he uses to break them down are blank on special paint cars.

Your car is pretty interesting. Ever find out anything from Ford on what it might have been used for?

That was my understanding as well, so I was surprised to see the SSP determination being made on the elite report for this 93 Calypso car. Maybe something has changed? It could be that the special paint cars may not be searchable for the SSP option. Still, I wonder if it might be worthwhile to send him an email with this elite report attached and ask him about it. You know me; I'm always willing to pursue lost causes in the search for SSP documentation. But I wonder if you would have better success with Kevin since you are a recent customer of his. It's been a while since I have ordered a batch of Marti Reports.

While attending the Woodward Dream cruise this past summer I was able to meet a gentleman whom works within the experimental vehicle dept and he took down a bunch of info on the car as well as pics....he was surprised that Ford had kept it for almost 2 1/2 years before release through the dealer network and that an employee had not bought it prior...he thought it may have been used for marketing purposes or was kept in house incase they needed a car for potential litigation ie: making sure fuel economy stated on window stickers was correct...really odd that it only had 2100 miles on it when sold to Crain Harter Ford in Huntington IN and then to the Huntington county Sherrif's dept...later traded back in on a new 99 Explorer...then it had 36k on the clock...

TWOCARNUTS 10-16-2015 12:35 PM

By the way I have not heard anything back from the Ford employee to date....hoping for sure...

Door data tag shot...I know there was some discussion about these..

FoxChassis 10-16-2015 12:50 PM

OK, I just looked at the build sheets in the Tech section here. I don't see anything in the remarks section on any of them about changing seats, other than reinforced seatbacks on the 1984 and 1985 sheets.

http://www.specialservicemustang.net/Build.html

The last sheet on that page (1993 FHP, PF154606) has "G6" for the trim code. Other FHPs in the VIN Project with the same DSO have "D6" for their trim code on their respective door tag.

Looking at the next two build sheets up from the bottom (1992 FHP and 1992 CHP) I see "FA" trim code for cloth seats.

The next one up (1992 Gainesville FL) has "DA" trim code, and the Marti report on its VIN Project page also shows the same trim code.

I will have to look at the database later and see what kind of door tag code and buck tag code patterns emerge.

Cool...I'd be interested to see what your research turns up.

My '93 FHP is 154610. G6/D6.

OK, reviewed what I have entered into the database so far. No D_ trim in LX 5.0L coupes before 1991, which is consistent with what the factory docs say. What I do have so far entered into the database is this:

1991
Most SSPs have F_ trim on the door tag but three so far have D_ trim...

UCLA - MF125461
GSA - MF161590
unknown - MF176449

The UCLA and GSA cars have DA (A/S grey) code trim on their door and buck tags. The unknown car we only have a Marti report. The report shows A/S black interior (DJ).

1992
Again, most SSPs have F_ trim but two so far have DA trim...

KSP - NF131914
KSP - NF131920

We have a buck tag only for NF131914 and it also has DA trim on that tag.

1993
This year all 71 SSPs that I have a door tag or Marti report for have D_ trim. Of the 14 that I have a clear shot of the trim code on the buck tag, all of them have a "G6" code. I have bunches of others that have a G6 code on the door tag, all of them LXes.

28HopUp 10-16-2015 09:14 PM

Mick, I know you enjoy doing the research, but thank you for taking the time to go through the information.

That sounds promising at least. Thanks for asking them about it.

ImEvil1 10-16-2015 09:27 PM

+1. Very interesting stuff.

FoxChassis 10-16-2015 09:36 PM

Forgot I had a clear shot of the trim code on the buck tag for the car in this thread. It does say "FJ". So make that all but 1 of the 15 say "G6".
