1993 SSP Original Owner
Here is my 1993 SSP car. I bought the car brand new (bear with me here...) from Windward Ford in Kailua Hawaii. I am a police officer here and in the Honolulu Police Department we have a program called the subsidized vehicle program. Basically the City and County pays us a monthly subsidy to use our own vehicles (from an approved list of vehicles) as our work/patrol vehicles. Back in the 90's Mustangs, Camaros, Monte Carlo SS were the cool cars we could use. Now it's mostly SUV and Toyota's, times do change. Anyway, back in the beginning of 1993 a fellow officer and close friend of mine worked a deal through Mike Mckenna Windward ford to bring in (originally 10, they did more later) SSP Mustangs for us to buy. I bought mine on 3-31, 1993 and used it as my personal vehicle until I put it into service around 1996. I used it for police work until 2001 and sold it. I recently bought it back and have been working on it ever since. Mine is the rare Royal Blue Metallic color.
Here it is in around 1997/98 with the removable light bar we used. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/640...923/6n9u8b.jpg Here is my original window sticker http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/640...924/6fyPoE.jpg http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/640...923/CgT2ln.jpg and my buck tags http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/640...924/AXahbJ.jpg and here is what it looks like now. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/640...922/vJ8RL8.jpg I think I saw my vin with a note saying never in service. It was in service, but don't know how to document it the way the HPD does things. I have a build thread on another site which tells the long version of this story http://forums.corral.net/forums/memb...-1993-ssp.html. Here is a walkaround video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tn7timyuVR0 Thanks Chris |

Welcome to the fourm! this has to be One of the most Interesting SSP Documentation's we have ever seen thank you for sharing this with us. I am familiar with the fact that the Hawaii Police can use their own vehicles as In Service work vehicles and this car was a great choice! again thanks for sharing this store with us and i hope to hear more! Welcome to the site! |
Thanks everyone. I have had 20+ foxbody mustang that have come and gone. I will never sell this one (again). This car is special beyond words.

Beyond cool. Welcome!

Thanks again. Another nice thing is this car has all of the vin stickers still intact and has all of its original panels.. I found little things I did to it 20 years ago. It's pretty cool

When I sold the car I somehow must have known it would come back to me someday because I kept all of the paperwork and owners manual. I remember saying to myself at the time that the "kid" buying the car wasn't going to care about any of this stuff. Here is what I have.

That's some foresight!

My friend who also had one of the SSP's here sent me some pictures of our cars that he had. His was silver with opal gray interior. It was an automatic with the same basic options as mine. At the time of these pictures we had both opted for pony rims, and you can tell I had just bought my house as I had no grass yet. He sold his too in about 2000 or 2001. I would love to find his old car. Here are the pictures he sent me.

Fantastic Car!! That Royal Blue is a very rare color on a coupe to begin with and then combine it with the SSP package....Awesome car!!

I did a Marti report, and don't get me wrong here..it was cool but it didn't really tell me anything I didn't already know about my car. The report told me how many LX Coupes were painted Royal Blue. It was 371. I was hoping the report would have broken it down to something like "of the 371 1993 royal blue coupes, X-many were SSP, yours is 1 of X that was a royal blue ssp car". It didn't...was a little bummed....

Welcome...and great story.

Vintage Honolulu PD SSP
2 Attachment(s)
Hey Chris,
Please find attached the two photos I mentioned in yesterday's email. Couldn't attach them there. Sorry for the photo quality. Didn't own a digital back then. The photos were taken in 1986, during our annual pilgrimage to your Islands, at a City garage somewhere near Waikiki, I think. It has the silver door lock bezels of a SSP but not the "black out" wheels. When I returned to the mainland I called a Engineer buddy of mine in Dearborn who called his buddy over in the SSP Office to ask "where's the black wheels". The SSP guy did some research and replied "we haven't sold a SSP Mustang to Honolulu". So I don't know if it was City owned or local dealer supplied/ loaned as a "test" vehicle or Officer Owned (and marked up). I do notice now that the car does not display a Unit number. There wasn't anyone around to ask while there and I was afraid to walk any further into the garage without permission. My Badge, from another State, may not have helped me too much if I got stopped. Maybe you can shed some light on this car if you were around back then, if you have time. I also remember that it seemed 5.0 Police units were everywhere back then. In fact I have a photo somewhere of a Police Mustang that has a Rental Mustang (5.0/ convertible) on a traffic stop on the saddle road on the Big Island. Still searching for that one. Hope both you and your Mustang are doing well! Aloha, Jerry |
Nice pics.
Probably not an SSP with those wheels. |
Interesting Jerry.
