Another 1989 Michigan SSP

1 Attachment(s)
A 1989 Michigan SP SSP turned up on FB, which is owned by Terry Miller. Terry also owns another Michigan SSP (lucky guy!). He kindly sent me some pics for our Project -

FYI on that sticker on the bumper. The number on that sticker (681_) is the rotations number on the build sheet (6812).

Thanks for the info, Mick!

1993 Calypso FHP

The following FHP car was already in the Project using the documentation provided by Jim Young -

http://www.specialservicemustang.net...info147248.htm

We knew it was a FHP car, but not the color(s). The photo of the buck tags had recently been shared online, and it appears as though it was a factory-painted Calypso SSP. It is the last FHP car in that consecutive batch of VINs, which continues on. The next VIN is a SSP that went to Winslow, Arizona, which is then followed by a RCMP car. It would have been great to see these cars running down the assembly line one after the other*

* - Yes, I am aware that cars didn't necessary roll down the line in consecutive numbers. It's just a nice visualization.

I haven't posted an update on totals since September 2021, so I thought I would do a quick tally. I didn't know the total when I started this post, but it turned out to be a minor milestone -

1982 --- 30
1983 --- 52
1984 --- 83
1985 -- 277
1986 -- 188
1987 -- 446
1988 -- 433
1989 -- 573
1990 -- 444
1991 -- 237
1992 -- 314
1993 -- 523
------------
. . . 3,600 SSP Mustangs confirmed

...and since we know that the 394 units grouped together in 1982 are all SSP Mustangs built for the CHP, the total is creeping up on 4K SSP Mustangs confirmed in the Project.

SSP Eye Candy

The owner of the following 1989 Nevada Highway Patrol SSP Mustang sent me add'l photos of his car. It was already in the Project, but the photos of the car (along with the original blue-rimmed spare in the trunk) add a nice touch to the page -

1987 CT State Police Units

We already had more than several of the 1987 Connecticut State Police SSP's in the Project using agency documentation that had been provided to us. Well, one unit had surfaced in April 2020 that included the VIN label and a Buck Tag, which I just added to its page:

http://www.specialservicemustang.net...info170657.htm

Worth noting is that this car (and the other CTSP units) were originally purchased from Ford through GELCO Leasing and were put into service by CTSP. I updated this car's page (and HF170655) to reflect that.

Cool 1987 FHP

This one was already in the Project, but it surfaced on FB showing it original "FHP repaint" which I added to its page -

I thought the new additions to the page for this 1993 USPS car were worth sharing -

The project has come a long way, in a relatively short period of time. Thanks for your dedication!

My pleasure! I've enjoyed being able to contribute to the hobby in this way, especially since I do not have an SSP at the moment.

As a related aside, I have now gotten through all of the photos shared with me by others and found on my own. It feels good to be caught up on new pages and updating existing ones (that feeling will be short lived, I'm sure). I had quite a few needing updates which are now even better. The Project still will be an evolving resource as new cars and documentation pops up. I still have MANY folders on likely SSP cars that need add'l documentation to confirm the SSP option.

28HopUp 12-11-2022 11:40 PM

I've been adding SSP's to the Project without commenting, but I thought the following SSP was worth mentioning. It is a 1989 NCSHP Mustang that was subsequently purchased by Marion County SOUTH CAROLINA -

http://www.specialservicemustang.net...info184235.htm

I think this is the first time I've seen a State-auctioned car being purchased by an out of state agency for their use.

MOstang 12-18-2022 12:36 PM

Interesting, that does seem uncommon, with SSPs.

Drewstang 12-20-2022 02:28 PM

I found some old paperwork while cleaning the basement after a move. I saw this vehicle was in the database with no unit number, but I confirmed it when I owned it. I was able to get three police reports from FHP that confirmed this was unit 1329.

1FABP40E1KF211995

Last I knew Gary Wheeler owned the car in Canada, but looks like he hasn't posted on either site in quite sometime. If anyone has his contact info I'd love to get these reports to him.

The paperwork is really great on that SSP, too!

1992 Mitchell County Sheriff Dept

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

This SSP was manufactured at the end of a consecutive run of Michigan cars -

1990 NCSHP

Th following 1990 NCSHP car showed up on FB recently so I was able to add it to our Project -

http://www.specialservicemustang.net...info153375.htm

There had been another SSP in that same group of VINs that we suspected as being a NCSHP car, and since it has the same DSO number as the tags on the newly added car we were able to confirm the ordering agency for it -

It's always interesting to me, the various local agencies that had these vehicles.

Rough 1989 FHP

This rough 1989 FHP was found in the wild and was posted on FB -

http://www.specialservicemustang.net...info225645.htm

Cobra Jet 06-30-2023 01:00 AM

Wow, yes rough indeed!

Is that at the back of someone’s personal property, or salvage yard?

Even though that far gone due to sitting out in the elements, some folks are able to bring those back, with a lot of effort.

Thanks for sharing.

MOstang 07-08-2023 12:01 PM

Shame to see it sitting like that. You'd think years earlier from this point would have found interest with someone to buy it.

28HopUp 09-02-2023 12:57 PM

The following 1984 FHP car popped up online with a nice amount of documentation -

http://www.specialservicemustang.net...info206942.htm

The Special Equipment Parts List shows 50 SSPs in that DSO which coincides with that batch of consecutive VINs. With Marti Reports confirming the DSO Number for the first and last car of that batch, and this new information, we were able to add the remaining 26 undocumented FHP cars to the Project, as seen here -

http://www.specialservicemustang.net...info206941.htm

28HopUp 09-02-2023 01:07 PM

Here are the current totals by year -

1982 --- 30
1983 --- 52
1984 -- 109
1985 -- 277
1986 -- 189
1987 -- 449
1988 -- 436
1989 -- 595
1990 -- 448
1991 -- 240
1992 -- 319
1993 -- 525
------------
. . . 3,669 SSP Mustangs confirmed *

* - Since we know that the 394 units grouped together in 1982 are all SSP Mustangs built for the CHP, the total is now over 4K SSP Mustangs confirmed in the Project.

Ha! No, I wasn't the bidder on that one however I did watch it though from the start of the auction. It's a shame it has extensive rot at the A-pillars, especially driver side where 90% of the A-pillar is totally gone from the bottom going up to roof.

I mean it can definitely be saved, that was a bargain price - but it definitely needs a total tear down and extensive rust repair, let alone it was mentioned it also had a locked engine and trans. Engine and trans if totally seized due to flood waters would need extensive repair or replacement. If it had that much rust topside, I can only imagine what it looks like under it... ?

Did another SSP Member get it?

28HopUp 10-01-2023 11:10 AM

I'm not sure who bought it. Hopefully it gets used in some way to benefit the hobby.

28HopUp 11-25-2023 09:03 AM

1986 CHP

This 86 CHP car has some interesting documentation, with an in-service photo subsequently posted on FB by our own Jack K...

http://www.specialservicemustang.net...info246956.htm

...and the Special Equipment Parts List confirms there were 168 SSPs in that DSO number, which coincidentally is the same number of consecutive VINs in that batch of cars. So the entire batch of VINs can now be confirmed as SSP Mustangs, like this one -

http://www.specialservicemustang.net...info246895.htm

:D
