Replacement VASCAR cable III

1 Attachment(s)
Ok...I finally found an early replacement for the lower. Can anyone verify the cable arrangement on an '87-'89 car? I know not many are out there, but it would be interesting to see if Matt B.'s theory on the mass-air cars is right (for '89-up). Anyhow, here is the lower, and it's black, like the later, OE lowers were. The OE lower in my '83 CSP car is grey, BTW.

Here's a pic that Jim Y. and I took of my '83, for comparison.

Will those work on a '93?

No, I don't think so. I don't know enough about the VASCAR setup on the '87-up cars, but the end on my '93 car is definitely different. I'm thinking that the '89-up cars got the speed sensor attachment (if that's the correct name for the part), but I haven't been able to verify that yet. The pic below shows the termination at the transmission for my '93 on the black, lower. I originally bought that car at auction in '97, and the lower cable was bad. The Ford dealer gave me a regular cable for a non-cruise application, and it wouldn't fit. I can't remember if the cable end looked like the one above or not, but I remember having to swap out the cable for a cruise-one (even though the car never had cruise).

That end is for the speed sensor for the cruise control and or mass air equiped cars. That has a clip that holds it on/in the speed sensor for the 87-93 cars that have cruise control and or mass air.

That's what I was thinking....1989 was the first year for mass air, right? (1988 for the California cars?)

Correct on the years for mass air but the cruise control cars will have the same cable as the 93. They have the speed sensor for the cruise.

Just a technical side note, I have yet to find a California sold '88 SSP that is mass air...even though the '88 CA retail cars had it and so did some SSPs of that year sold in other states. An enduring build mystery that at this point has not been definitively answered.

This is correct. I wonder if the 88's that were ordered were late 87's that were VIN'd as 88's. Like they were in the queue/DSO allready before that standard came down for CA cars.
