CHP E-plate ranges

Do we know what they are for each year?

Sam: I've seen you post some of them in various threads. Have you done them all, or do you have that info?

Any one else?

If everyone else knows what they are I don't and I'd like to get them all in one place. Thanks.

EDIT:

My 1992 plate is 895201 ( Antelope Valley )
Drove a 91 or 92 in Stockton plate # 389522 and also a 90 I believe ( has black wheels ) plate # 435235

I have photos of them here.

The 2 from Stockton came out of the Sacto Motor Services Bldg.
My car or the SoCal cars came out of the SoCal ( Torrence ) Motor Services Bldg. May be why the different plate variations.

They got a pile of plates form DMV from 2 different locations during the same time. The only way to figure this out I think, is to work cars from SoCal areas, and work cars from NorCal areas.

I think the plate pattern will fall in place that way.
They would do a run of Muatangs, pull plates from the pile.
Then do a run of Sedans, pull plates form the same pile, so by the time they did another run of Mustangs, who knows what the plate numbers were by then.

I seriously doubt anyone will know for sure also. I have talked to people working in Motor trans, and they tell me the same thing.
" we just pulled the next plate from the pile and stuck it on, that's the unit number it got "

That's the answer. Hope that helps you some.

So far I've only found 82 and 87 out of my dads paperwork. I'm going to go back through what I've found. I've even found test paperwork from when the CHP tested the 84 SVO:D

I have seen on some paper work that is the same as the ones with E-plate ranges without E plates.

I think I may have commented on this before, but I noticed that the E-plates skipped around on the CA smog website. I failed to write it down, but as I went through a known range of E88xxxx or E89xxxx Mustang plates I found at least one GMC Sierra 1500 pickup included in the batch of plates.

Sam, is any of your Dad's paperwork something that can be added to the VIN project? If so, please scan it and send me an email. If you want, you can add a copyright notation to each image.

Maybe we can edit post #1 with up-to-date information as plate ranges are posted?

So there seems to be more plates than there are reported CHP's for 90? Interesting how mine "E389583" seems to be highest plate/unit # but was in the middle of the Con VIN run..

There is no correlation between VINs and plate # order (e.g., cars were not run through assembly at Motor Transport by VIN#). They were received and parked in a huge lot in no particular order then pulled out in batches of no particular order and sent through upfitting where the plates were assigned by the order the cars were in on the line.

Plate assignment is different now and not in the hands of the Motor Transport techs. The vehicle certificates of origin from the factory are sent to DMV who assign plates to each one. CHP admin personnel then receive and put the plates on the proper cars before they ever enter the building for upfitting. That's how it was explained to us in April, right John?

John10608 10-31-2012 08:07 PM

I'll second that.

My car is a 92, and the plate is 895201, so who knows what they started with on the 92's.

T.M.I. for me to figure out.

It's cool info though for those wanting to spend the time trying to figure it out. Keep us posted !
Thanks
