1988 SSP from KC

Hey guys, just wanting to share my new ride, and figure out what I can about it. I bought this on a spurs notice, really not even knowing about the SSP aspect. These are pics the day I bought it. I've cleaned it up since then.

http://i531.photobucket.com/albums/d...ps9a9d8227.jpg Full size spare black 10 hole in the trunk, and a couple studded snow tires on regular 10 holes.
It's got full length subframe connectors, boxed rear control arms, A k-member brace, not sure how much is SSP, and not a lick of rust on the bottom side. The trunk release and gas door popper are located on the driver side, the locks and trunk are keyed the same, various mounts and holes on the dash.

It does look like it had a front end collision at some point, pretty minor, but you can see where the passenger fender was moved to realign it.

Vin # is 1fabp40e5jf196660

stadair 02-24-2013 12:47 AM

Thanks for sharing. That'll be a fun project. And do I see an '84 Saleen also?!

4eyedfoxdriver 02-24-2013 08:47 AM

You see a 84 Saleen clone. We also have another 84.
http://i531.photobucket.com/albums/d...ps344c45ca.jpg

Does anyopne know what the hand written # and date under the hood is? I have not seen anything explaining this.

FoxChassis 02-24-2013 09:44 AM

That car is the first in a batch of 17 consecutive LX 5.0L coupe VINs (JF196660 through JF196681). One car in that batch is in the VIN project, but the agency has not been confirmed:

http://www.specialservicemustang.net...info196666.htm

4eyedfoxdriver 02-24-2013 10:53 AM

So is that any indication of where mine might have come from?
I keep wanting to think it came from Nebraska or Missouri.

28HopUp 02-24-2013 12:44 PM

Does your SSP have the same DSO number on the driver's door VIN label as the car linked to above (which MAY be a OSP car)? Here is the info that turned up on AutoCheck -

So your car was ordered by a dealer in Washington state. My guess is your car was used by either the WSP or OSP.

FoxChassis 02-24-2013 01:19 PM

Bill do we know the original (1988) destination of all 17 in that batch?

FoxChassis 02-24-2013 01:26 PM

I have no idea where I got the number "17" from in my two posts above but that batch has 22 in it.

MOstang 02-24-2013 01:50 PM

1988 model year Missouri SSPs were auto transmissions. I think the VIN numbers are out there on those the MSHP ordered that year too, perhaps by members on this forum.

4eyedfoxdriver 02-24-2013 01:52 PM

Thanks very much for that info. The guy I bought it from was deployed when it was purchased by his wife. He said it had been sitting awhile when he got it.

Here's my door, I did not see a DSO....
http://i531.photobucket.com/albums/d...ps31849246.jpg
http://i531.photobucket.com/albums/d...psbf29c170.jpg

FoxChassis 02-24-2013 01:59 PM

On your door tag, directly above "DSO" is a six digit number.

It is 740023, same as the other car already in the VIN Project.

74 = Seattle (WA) district sales office
0023 = domestic special order #0023 (for the 1988 model year)

Mustangs with six-digit DSOs are usually, but not always, SSPs.

Mustang Kid 02-24-2013 02:00 PM

I'm gonna say WSP. Ordered In Washington, white with blue interior, single and spotlight. The two holes at the top of the dash in the center might have been for their switch box that was mounted in that spot on the dash.
OSP wouldn't be ordering their cars out of Washington.

4eyedfoxdriver 02-24-2013 02:02 PM

Gotcha, had to clean the glasses to see the little dso. Yes it is the same.

FoxChassis 02-24-2013 02:08 PM

What would really help ID'ing the original agency that ordered this car (and possibly every other VIN in that same batch) would be the buck tags...

http://www.specialservicemustang.net/Bucktags.html

4eyedfoxdriver 02-24-2013 07:23 PM

It sure looks like my buck tags are gone. It seems like I can see where they were, with a little hole where they were attached, behind the drivers light.

FoxChassis 02-24-2013 08:39 PM

1 Attachment(s)
You did look down lower than the upper bar on the radiator core support, right? When Dearborn went back to stapling them (mid '88?) they moved them back down lower where the very early ('79-'80?) Fox tags were.

4eyedfoxdriver 02-24-2013 08:57 PM

Yes, that's where I looked. The area I suspected them being appears to be the marked area for the 88 up.

OSP cars have been verified with the DSO 74 ordering district on them.

FoxChassis 02-24-2013 11:48 PM

OSPs were ordered through DSO 74 (Seattle) but all of the Marti reports that I have seen show them being sold through Damerow Beaverton Ford (dealer # 74C017) in Beaverton, OR.

Hmm. Never knew that. Interesting thing learned today.

FHP 510 02-25-2013 01:26 AM

I ordered the deluxe Marti report, my FHP was delived to a dealer in Tampa, If you want to spend the money, Im sure it would have "Dealer to whom delived" on it, along with the address

FoxChassis 02-25-2013 09:55 AM

JF196666 was ordered through the dealer number 74E202.

The deluxe report for HF168930 shows 74E202 as McCollum Ford in Spokane, WA.

Without me going through my files, just my memory, I found out what dealership and address not through a Marti Report, but either through Ford or California DMV...

4eyedfoxdriver 03-11-2013 11:59 AM

I'm thinking about getting rid of this car and am wondering what a fair market price would be. I haven't decided for sure, but the more I drive it, the more I realize I like driving my older hot rodded mustangs, and I know I don't want to do that to this. So I also don't want to sale this someone with that intention. The price just seems a pretty wide spread on these, hard for a novice to figure out what would be fair.
A grind into 3rd gear when the tranny is cold, is really it's biggest problem.

28HopUp 03-11-2013 12:39 PM

I'm not sure about coming up with a fair value, but here is your SSP's page in our VIN Project:

http://www.specialservicemustang.net...info196660.htm

Can anyone ID those markings on the firewall as WSP or OSP?

4eyedfoxdriver 03-11-2013 12:49 PM

That's cool , seriously so. I wish I had more info to help out more. Looks like I should get some better pics of the door.

Does anyone know what the # under the hood is?

I would love to see this car go to a restorer or someone looking to keep it just like it is, yet still drive and enjoy it.

4eyedfoxdriver 03-20-2013 06:30 PM

Got some new rubber on the 10-holes today, looking more like it should. I've got some places on the wheels to touch up, and they put some god ugly weights on there that I'll paint up.

I have a new set of front lights that I will be installing as soon as we get some decent weather for a day. Then some buffing and waxing.

While I'm not actively selling at this time, I'm most likely going to put it up for sale when I get the title back. Some time in the next couple months. I'm thinking around 5k, but would take trades for 4eyes, or 4banger fox for my 16yo.

4eyedfoxdriver 03-20-2013 06:59 PM

Also wanted to add, took this to the dyno a couple weeks ago. I was thinking at the time I was going to be modding this, and wanted to see where it started, and played around with a SCT Bama tuned chip some. Well it put down 207 hp and 270Ft . IMO quite strong at the tires, since it's not a Dynojet, and runs about 12% lower then 1. http://i531.photobucket.com/albums/d...ps21bff021.jpg

For those interested, the Bama tuned chip took it up to 208hp, it's now been uninstalled.

4eyedfoxdriver 04-14-2013 04:55 PM

Replaced the front lights today. Cleaned up the inside and out, as well as the engine bay.

The car is listed for sale, but if I do much more, I might not be able to sale it.

4eyedfoxdriver 04-21-2013 01:42 PM

Painted up the black on the bumpers today. Taped, sanded them lightly, and used a flat bumper paint. Turned out better then I expected.http://i531.photobucket.com/albums/d...ps001185a9.jpghttp://i531.photobucket.com/albums/d...ps9c07c9cb.jpg

Bringing some info over from another thread, thanks Rhino for the great info.

Here's some info on those markings:

The top 4 digits are the inventory # as used in the pre-delivery inspection (PDI). LG stands for Leonard Griffin (Who worked for McCallom Ford in Spokane). He marked the firewall on every car he inspected with his initials. All of our cars have them - even the PCSD Mustangs. The bottom date is when the car was inspected at the dealer.

For comparison - here's a few pics of my cars:

1 of the family. I just got the 84 convertible for my son, he turns 16 next month. The black one is my older son's 84, and the Saleen clone is my 84. http://i531.photobucket.com/albums/d...ps2ed2e560.jpg

4eyedfoxdriver 08-04-2013 11:28 AM

Thought it was time for a little update. I have really been liking driving this car. I've got most all of the little bugs worked out of it, and can say it drives better then any other Fox I've had. I took it on a road trip and had it down on some "mountain" Arkansas roads, it ate them up. I put my Cobra wheels, with a 245 tire on it, I'm sure that helped, but still it stayed nice and flat.

I guess you could say I'm going to resto-mod this thing, with more emphasis on resto, and mods to get the performance on track with modern performance cars. I want people to look at this thing and say, "look at the old police car" not "look at the Hot Rod". It will be a driver, I want at home on a road trip, road track , auto-x, or a car show.

I'm getting ready to change the heads and intake, to Trick Flow. I feel bad about changing it from stock, but I feel power is this things biggest weakness. I'm going to keep everything, so it can be restored to stock if wanted. I'm not going to change the cam right now.

I've been looking into a radio system, I believe it would be the Motorola Micor. I have someone on another forum who says he can put me something together to work on the Family Radio System, but it's something else. I feel like if I'm going to put something in there, I want it to be right. Any info on the easiest right way to do it? And if it's going that far, I would probably want a PA.

GregS 01-01-2014 06:46 PM

Looking good.

Looks Good

4eyedfoxdriver 01-19-2014 11:49 PM

Thanks, guys.
I did get my heads, and intake put on.
http://i531.photobucket.com/albums/d...ps95e6b323.jpg

Also did some 3.55 gears, h-pipe and Dynomax catback. With the stock cam the driving characteristics stayed the same, but picked up about 70hp on the dyno.

GameOn 01-22-2014 10:54 PM

70 horses with a stock bottom end? Nice!

4eyedfoxdriver 04-04-2014 10:15 PM

Well since I bought a nice 83 , for a hot rod, I changed my plan with this. Took the upgrades off, and put the stock stuff back on, well mostly. The plan is a stock restore, when I'm not modding the other one.

awaite85 01-26-2019 09:49 AM

Hi all :)

My name is Adam Waite. This exact SSP was my father's car from 1991 to 2011.

We bought it in Seattle in 1991, lived in Wentachee until 1999,then moving down here to Mid MO.

I felt like I had seen a family for the 1st time in years when I saw the pics on the 1st post. The rims and the yellow scrape on the back gave it away.

My dad won several drag racing trophies in the 90's at Seattle drag strip in this car. He would change the back tires to slicks and take the back seat out for weight reduction.

This was the very 1st car I drove when I was 15 years old on the back roads outside of Stover, MO.

He sold it in 2011 when he got a new Stang. I started hunting it down a couple weeks ago, which has led me here. I had heard it was in a SSP museum that restore's it to specs of when it was a State Patrol car. I hope this isn't true.

It is a very special car in my family. I still can't believe I found some pics of it, even if they are from 2013.

MOstang 01-27-2019 02:48 PM

Thanks for sharing the back story....
