Please help! Idling issues.

My 1990 NC SSP will not idle and stay running unless I keep my foot on the accelerator. So far I have checked for vacuum leaks, replaced IAC, TPS, fuel filter. Also went by Advance auto to see if they could check codes, but the said the oldest they check is 1995. All help is greatly appreciated.

try watching this. Mine was idleing high. I adjusted the TPS and it brought it down to where it's suppose to be.

This might help, might not. Try searchign on YouTube anything about Adjusting Throttle or TPS or anything to try different things to get it fixed.

Did you put a new TPS on it ? It may need adjusted if so.
It's easy to do and worked for me.

Hope this helps some.

Also, make sure you use Throttle Body Cleaner, not carb cleaner !!!
Clean everything with it, it helped me.

Thanks, I will purchase a voltage meter and try the TPS adjustment.

I will post my results after the weather permits and after I purchase a voltage meter. Thanks for the help.

Still trying to resolve idling issue.

I purchased a voltimeter and obd1 code reader for my birthday. Hopefully I will be able to figure why my car will not idle unless I keep my foot on the accelerator lightly. As soon as I take my foot off, it cuts off. I am very frustrated, but I will not give up. It is my daily driver due to giving my other car to my 16 year old daughter. Will try to adjust my new TPS with the voltimeter first. Then I will search for codes. My service engine is not on though. Thanks again for the help.

Also... adjust the idle screw, screw it in some until it starts to idle by itself.
I fixed the CHP Museum's mustang that way. It had the same problem as you are having.
It was screwed all the way out.
Put a newer TPS on it, adjusted it and the idle screw.

Ran perfectly after all of that. A little throttle body cleaner, adjust the TPS and the idle screw. See what happens.

Thanks for the help. Will try and post results asap.

Is the idle screw adjusted with an Allen wrench? I will try adjusting it tomorrow and will post results. Thanks again.

Still need help with my 1990 NC SSP idle issues.

I adjusted my new TPS and I also reset my idle. When it is cold I still have to keep my foot on the accelerator, but after it warms up, it idles pretty level. Do you guys think I should adjust my throttle body set screw or what recommendations do you guys have. I appreciate all of the help.

Once I burn more of my 93 octane out I will add 87/89 octane.

Is it okay to add Sea Foam or other cleaners once a month? Will post as soon as I have an update. Hopefully when I get most 87/89 octane fuel in my car it will help the cold idle issue I have. I thought that putting 93 octane in my car was helping, little did I know that it could be hurting my car. Thanks again for help.

Sounds like you fixed some of the problem. Outside of taking the car to a mechanic, I'd drive it around for a while, try to use up a tank of gas, at the same time stopping and using Throttle Body Cleaner as often as you can.

New fuel is good, in case you have seperation in this new junk they are selling us. If this fails to fix it, I guess I'd be going to a mechanic as I am somewhat limited on mechanical issues.

Sometimes a computer can pin point the issue, saves loads of time.

Thanks and I will keep you guys posted.

Thanks for all of the help and hopefully in a few days I will have this idling issue resolved.

Did this start out of the blue or after something was worked on under the hood?

1990 NC SSP 03-26-2014 08:42 PM

It was like it when I purchased the car. Still have cold idle issue+ when coating.

When I purchased this car it had this issue. I thought it was the IAC or TPS. I changed both and reset idle and also adjusted volts on TPS to below 1 volt. I still am having cold idle issues. When my tank was half empty yesterday I added 87 octane hoping it would help it with idling and also with jerking when de-accelerating. No such luck. Will adjust the throttle body set screw and fill entire tank with 87 octane when near empty. Hopefully this will help, if not I will put her in the shop as soon as it is in the budget.

Could even be something as simple as the "ACT" sensor

They are usually pretty cheap at the local parts store and very easy to change.

It's ok to run the Sea Foam thru the car if done properly, but to much can actually not be good for it.

It's usually a good idea to check your spark plugs after doing it, because it can actually foul out your spark plugs since it works "that good". But again it really depends on how and how much you run it thru the car.

FHP0827 03-27-2014 02:31 PM

I don't think it's any type of "fouling" issue.......unless it's fouled spark plugs possibly. These engines are always filthy inside since they re circulate crankcase vapor back into the intake, but apparently it doesn't bother them at all. Really sounds like a vacuum leak to me is the most likely cause. Incidentally, what kind of plugs are you running in it? I have found that they really don't seem to like Bosch Platinums for what it's worth.

Update on idle issues.

I completed a base idle reset again and it seemed to be idling ok. When I turn the heat the idle lowers and nearly turns off. I will see how she runs in the a.m.. My car has motorcraft spark plugs, but it need to probably change them soon for a tune up. There is also a pretty bad exhaust leak on the passenger side I will address as soon as possible. I wish she was ready for the 50th Anniversary Mustang car show in Charlotte, but she is not ready. Maybe I will be able to show my car at the 51st Anniversary next year. Thanks for all of the help.

I had same problem, changed everything, nothing seem to fix it.I performed a smoke test and found I had leaking intake gaskets,The lower ones were sucking air causing the idle surge. If any questions gimmie a shout dude
