Wow. Really? Just crazy.

GSPI 12-16-2011 09:32 AM

I should try to make those. I have a process that can duplicate those exactly.

Maybe you and Bill can get together on it. He is working on making some of these for everyone (delayed to an equipment failure).

GSPI 12-16-2011 11:12 AM

I really haven't looked at these before since I wasn't restoring a CHP car but I can see that there have been quite a few people that are doing them. I would need dimensions but I think this could work with a process I use for Kevlar and Graphite. A little experimentation and I can tell you if it would work. Anybody know what specifically they were made of? I see aluminum for the vehicle mount and it looks like .050 fibreglas matting for the insulator.

Get with Bill. I sent him one that I have to use as a go-by and he already purchased the material (I believe).

I have the correct phenolic (sp?) material, and can cut the proper shape/size using my band saw. My problem is that I lost my drill press.

It's not that I can no longer find it, but that it found a new home. It was an old Delta floor-standing drill press that my Brother-In-Law gave me 5 years ago. Well, he died in 2008, and his sons missed out on getting a lot of his old tools. My nephew who will be installing the fresh 5.0L in my SSP ended up getting his dad's old drill press back. So it definitely found a more deserving home. But I now need to figure out how to drill a straight hole through the clips. Maybe Santa will bring me a new drill press?

Let me know as I have a drill press if you need the assistance.

been away for a couple of days. this Ebay auction was good for me as I laughed uncontrollably for about 5 minutes when I saw that someone is actually bidding 62.00 for this .25 cent part.

Easily made
material can still be bought cheaply
the bracket is a piece of aluminum strap bent to fit the contour of the vehicle.

Bill I have a drill press. You cut them out, I will drill them and then you can give them away.

I know a guy(who is a member here) who has been working on reproducing these. Just for a sheet of the material(I forget how large it was), it was $50 IIRC.
For someone who is looking for this stuff and has been looking for items for a long time, they will pay whatever to get it. It is kinda like '72 Trans Ams. People will pay a bunch for a rusted shell if its the real deal.

there is no need to "look for this stuff". Buy it and make yourself one. People see this stuff on ebay and lose their minds. The CHP stuff is some of the easiest to replicate as it was all fabbed in their shop from common material. This auction is just as crazy as the 500.00 shotgun rack. Yeh I know....it's "their" money and they can spend it how they choose and that is correct. But when they do I reserve the right to consider it a foolish purchase.

Bill, go to Sears, buy a new drill press, and start banging out these clips. At the current prices I'll have the new tool paid off in no time!

[Don't worry, once I have my clips available they'll be about 10% of that price, including postage]

Rhino 01-10-2012 03:20 PM

Shall we all chip in for a drill press? Cause I'd like 2 when we're rockin' and rollin'. :)

MOstang 01-10-2012 08:07 PM

Holy cow!
