1985 CHP #8337 - My First SSP

This is my first SSP:)
My dad (and mom) gave me this car for my 16th birthday.
It was a California Highway Patrol Mustang back in the day. It will once again be one in the future;) I have no intentions of modding this car in anyway, other than making it look better than it did when it was new:D

It appears to have 127k original miles with 2 repaints- white before sold by the CHP, and white again). Car is mostly all original (still has the plugs the CHP put in the holes on the interior A pillar), headers, stereo, tires, and front bumper are not original. Interior is still pretty nice, all the plastics will need to be freshened up with some dye, new upholster will be needed as well, but is driver quality. The drivers seat was switched to the passenger side due to failure (brackets bent or a bolt broke). Pulling up the dash pad revealed one speaker with no indication there was ever more than one installed.

You can still see where all the equipment was mounted - spotlight holes, shotgun rack holes on dash, whip antenna base hole, roof antenna hole, reflective tape on doors is still visible so is the unit number. Underneath the white paint the car wears now, is the CHP repaint which was white. Underneat that you can still see shiny black and white paint in places where One Day did not sand before painting. The front bumper is not original and needs to be replaced, as it is deteriorating away.

The kid my dad got the car from (my dad traded a real clean 97 Crown Vic straight across, a month later the Crown was totaled. If my dad hadn't done the trade, or couldn't, it could have been the SSP) drove the car to his girlfriends house one night. The next morning he went to start the car and it would do nothing but crank over. That afternoon, he and a friend started replacing stuff like spark plugs and wires. They did not put the wires back on the correct way so the car would still not start. A week or so after that my dad traded the Crown for the car. My dad tried getting the car to start, it had all the essentials to run, but wouldn't do anything more than crank over. My dad didn't have the time to look anyfurther so the car has just sat until now.

Today I somewhat fixed the RF fender (still bent), and worked on getting it running. I had asked on FEP what the problem could be a couple months ago. I checked all those things (my dad already knew some of the suggestions were not the prob), then I decided to check the plug wires. Looking in my shop manual, none of the wires were in the right spot on the distributor cap. My friend Bert help get all the wire in the for sure right spot (he is a mechanic and really smart). We poured some gas in the carb and turned the key. It started to sputter and came to life for about a second. Tomorrow I'm going to put some gas in the tank and see if the car will run:)

I am going to post A LOT of pics for my first few posts to show all the documenting I did and what has been done:thumbsup:

great start

wow, what a great start for a 16 yr old. My father bought me my first car when I was 16 (1972) it was a 1967 Mercury Cougar for $300.. It will be fun to get it running and get it back to original, it will take some money & time, but ask for help on this forum and FEP and your friends. Dont get discouraged, some days will be frustrating. Good luck.

Mustang Kid 10-02-2011 12:43 AM

I will save a lot of money by doing stuff myself and with the help of my dad. I have learned a lot on this forum (knowing what to look for like equipment mounting holes and a lot more).

Rhino 10-02-2011 02:01 AM

Way to go, Sam! :) You'll have a ton of fun working on the car.

Keep the pics coming. :2thumbs:

28HopUp 10-02-2011 08:54 AM

Very Nice, Sam! Thanks for posting so many pictures. You're in for a lot of fun with this project! :)

GSPI 10-02-2011 09:05 AM

These times when you are documenting are some of the most necessary and critical things you have to do to keep track of what is going on during a restoration. Sam, you are doing a great job and keep those photos coming!

Keep up the good work, I'm sure your dad is proud of you too! A chip off the old block in a manner of speaking. :2thumbs:

Mustang Kid 10-02-2011 10:31 PM

:( The piggy is sick!!
Put some gas in the tank, turned the key and it sputtered to life again. Poor thing ran like it was having a seizure and was blowing dark grey smoke out the pipes:eek:
Good thing is is that it runs:2thumbs: The carb was dumping gas in and flooding the engine(probably why it ran horrible along with left over bad gas).
This car will be much easier to restore than my 84 GT, it will go a lot faster too since it is complete (I have a large parts list for the 84, it is at around 5k with new parts).

Mustang Kid 10-02-2011 11:03 PM

Here is a vid of it running. Watch the front plate...

This is what was coming out of the pipes when it ran:( Probably the old gas is contributing.

http://i1104.photobucket.com/albums/...7/P1010413.jpg

Mustang Kid 10-05-2011 10:48 PM

Here is the current plan-
Car needs nickname:) (other than 8337 ;) )
Re paint cowl trim and mirrors
Find original LH taillight lens
Have window trim sent out to be re anodized (when I can afford it)
Redye all plastics in interior (+ dash and door panels)
Find nice headliner
New carpet
Get'r runnin good so I can drive it
Strip the window tint
New package tray (or nice original)
Install equipment in interior:D (need to find gun rack, or modify one of my dads many racks- would need photos of an original)

93chipper 10-05-2011 11:46 PM

before you do that you should rebuild the drivetrain first (motor, tranny rear end) these cars are all amost 20 years old or older remember you can have the nicest paint and interior but it dont mean a thing if it dont run and if i was you i would check the valve train because it was ticking these cars like mine have at least 100,000 miles on them mine almost has 200,000 miles and i know it needs a rebuild because it is alot on what i think is the original motor i was like you 16 at the time bugging people to buy their chps then here i am i bought a 93 really cheap and im figuring out what i should do to it first. mine is 5333 but i call it chippy

Mustang Kid 10-06-2011 11:22 PM

I am choosing to do the interior first because that is something know how to do and can do easily. Doing the drivetrain first would be the right thing to do. It was a running driving car before the kid messed up the plug wires(or something else?). I am going to buy a carb rebuild kit and rebuild the carb (with help from my mechanic friend of course. I'm a noob when it comes to carbs lol).
I will also change the plugs, plug wires, trans fluid, rear fluid, and antifreeze. If that all gets it running a lot better then I will be very happy:D. The smoke is from the Carb flooding the engine out, all the rubber seals must have deteriorated away from new gas.

Mustang Kid 10-07-2011 09:37 PM

Tomorrows Quest- Hunt for the build sheet:D + clean the interior.

I cant remember 20 years ago when I installed new carpet in the car but I think mine was on the right rear floorboard under the carpet.

Mustang Kid 10-08-2011 12:03 AM

I've tried looking, didn't appear to be on the front floor boards, and the seats have make looking under the rear foot wells of the carpet.

EDIT

Mustang Kid 10-08-2011 02:41 PM

Quest #1 is complete- Found the build sheet:)

With the help of Bert again, we worked on the carb today. Tuning the carb mixture was becoming a challenge(right sized hex head, and turning while it was bolted into place), so to save time, we took the carb off my 84 GT which ran fine. Plugged everything in and it started right up with one turn of the key:D Casper runs like a champ now(still needs tune up though).

Mustang Kid 10-08-2011 06:52 PM

CHP Equipment

My dad has collected all the correct Equipment for an 80's CHP car. I get to use that stuff on my mustang:D
What goes in the car-
CHP Regency TOUCH M1000 scanner
Complete Radio (forgot the model, but it is the correct one for an 80's CHP)
Federal emergency equip. control box w/ mic.
Whip antenna
Spotlights
Trunk box (I have what is left of one (pic posted in previous post), I will recreate one in my woodshop class)
And package shelf lights and brackets.
(some of the equipment is 85 vintage)

I still need wireing, wig-wag setup, gun rack (may combine an aero SSP CHP rack with one out of a caprice to make a correct 85.), interior equip. brackets, and a trunk equip. shelf.
I'm getting there little by little:thumbsup:

And...scan up a pic of the build sheet when you can. Where fdid you find it?

Mustang Kid 10-08-2011 08:55 PM

I will let you know if I find any other equipment on eBay or somewhere(that is where my dad finds stuff) Ryan.
I found the Build Sheet under the carpet in the LR foot well area. On top of it I found some paint guide/fix sheet.
