That car seems familiar. I saw elsewhere that a member there is bidding on it.

The comment about bidding on it was deleted ..
Is this car vin # related to JPARGO's old santa clara ssp??

28HopUp 05-04-2011 11:26 AM

Just to CLARA-fy (get it?:D), this one on Ebay is not JPARGO's old car, but I wonder how close the VIN's are?

(It's hard to speculate why that post was deleted - no biggie!)

A point of clarification is needed here - the commonly referred to "Santa Clara" unmarked SSPs were indeed owned by Santa Clara County but they were used by investigators in the District Attorney office and were not SO units. All the the Mustangs used by the Sheriff in that county were marked traffic units like the one pictured below:

Mike,
Being semi new to the ssp world I'm a bit confused....
So these 2 ssp's in chat here were in fact marked ??? Thx

NoDrama43 05-04-2011 06:02 PM

the blue car on ebay is a 1990 and was used by the district attorneys office. It was a "pool" car and that is why the miles are as low as they are.

JPargo's car is/was a 1991 and was also a "pool car" hence the low miles.

My red 1991 Santa Clara car was assigned to one invesstigator it's entire service life.

the pool cars were/could be used by anyone whose regular car was down etc.

they had NO lights except for a red 5 inch light that flipped down on the passenger visor side.

siren mounted in glove box that had the rear of it cut out.

ONE toggle switch on dash surround that turned on the siren .

NO spotlights

NO antenna. they used the factory ford location with a "styco" setup.

Micor single tier radio mounted in the dash under the factory radio.

ssp91ssp 05-04-2011 10:26 PM

Thanks ...Jim

So would you say that calling them Sheriff's cars ....IS WRONG in this case?

NoDrama43 05-04-2011 10:53 PM

the car for sale is a Santa Clara County car. Purchased by the county for county use, assigned to the county district attorney's office, not the sheriffs department. Not used for patrol. it was a pool car.

used today by a records clerk
used tomorrow by a case investigator
used next week by a secretary
used the next day by a mail clerk

years ago, before the car went to auction I spoke with the fleet manager who confirmed this about several of the remaining low mileage cars that were still sitting in their lot.

Hartge330Ci 05-04-2011 11:44 PM

That is correct. My better half is a Deputy with the SO and she called the fleet manager. It is a DA pool car. Not a SO Patrol car. I am interested in the car, but for what it is the current price seems high already. There is also some info it was repaired post a fire/tc. No details though.

NoDrama43 05-05-2011 08:11 AM

Welcome to the site ! :)

ssp91ssp 05-05-2011 09:37 AM

Thanks for the clarification...Jim ;)

Welcome to the site, Hartage330Ci and thanks for the info.

28HopUp 05-05-2011 10:02 AM

Thanks for the add'l input on this SSP. It's still an interesting vehicle. :)

Welcome to the forum! Question - Does the fleet manager that your better half spoke with have any historical records about this particular car?

GSPI 05-05-2011 10:11 AM

Yep, welcome aboard Hartge330Ci! Thanks for the information.

Hartge330Ci 05-05-2011 01:25 PM

I am working on finding out more info today.

Welcome aboard!

I'd sure like to find out more about the SO marked units too. If you can, see if there are any records, info. etc. about those still available.

Hartge330Ci 05-05-2011 02:08 PM

I'll see what I can do for sure.

Hartge330Ci 05-06-2011 04:08 PM

Wasn't able to get anymore info yesterday, but she's trying again today. I saw that someone else from sspmustangs.org is trying to bid on the car and I wanted to post there that I was interested, but so far the moderators haven't approved my account (4 days later that is...), so no way to let people over there know I am interested. Hope the price doesn't skyrocket. We would like to have the car.

28HopUp 05-06-2011 04:17 PM

Thanks for the update. Were some bids retracted on that ebay auction? I thought the bidding had been higher. Good luck on the auction!

Good luck on the bidding....glad to have you here.

Hartge330Ci 05-06-2011 05:03 PM

I found out that there were a total of 13 Mustangs the County owned. Some were DA Pool Cars or DA Investigator cars, others were Patrol Units. The only way to look up info is if you have the VIN number of the vehicle, but it does look like they have decent records if you can give them the info to look it up by. I am also told that none of the DA cars had any emergency vehicle equipment other than a radio. If someone knows otherwise, I would love to know. It does look like someone retracted a bid, as the car was already at $6900 and now it's back at $45.., not sure why.

Jim's (NoDrama) post mentions the lights...hot-shoe type from a manufacturer in CA. I can't remember the name.

We did alot of research on them 6 or 7 years ago when he owned that car.

Thanks for getting that info. Did they say which model years those Mustangs were? All 1990s? The list of 19 consecutive VINs that this car falls into might be a good starting point to look up for more info:

Hartge330Ci 05-06-2011 07:26 PM

That's probably a good starting point. I am not sure why they would say there were no lights in the car....? I don't know how accurate the records are when it comes to equipment. Along those lines, there were also no details on the fire/tc info. Probably pretty minor though, since they continued using the car afterwards. Wish I had more info on it.

I spoke to the investigator that was assigned to the Santa Clara Car for the entire time it was in service. He advised of the hot shoe light. I spoke with the manufacturer of the hot shoe lamp. He stated he sold them to the district attorneys office.

The toggle switch to turn on the emergency equipment was still in the car and can be seen in this picture. It is directly above the trunk release button.

Hartge330Ci 05-07-2011 12:10 AM

That's good info to have. I wonder of they had some that had the light and some that didn't. Do you still have contact with that investigator?

NoDrama43 05-07-2011 07:05 AM

no I do not.

28HopUp 05-07-2011 07:08 AM

That's a nice looking car Jim. What ever happened to it?

NoDrama43 05-07-2011 07:18 AM

I have no idea where it ever ended up. The last I heard it is in Florida with all kinds of BS lights and other equipment in it.

I would have kept it but I wanted my collection to be all State Police agency cars which is what I have now.

it was a very very nice car. Only had 103k on it, 98% original paint, mint interior, quarter windows etc.

Hartge330Ci 05-08-2011 09:58 PM

So I bought it..... now I just need to figure out how to get it home.....
