1982 ssp need advice

Hey guys,

I'm considering buying a 1982 ex chp mustang. First off, I'm a college student who's been interested in getting a project car for a while, but hasnt ever had the funds to do so. I should let everyone know, that I know very little about cars, but intend to gain experience by jumping in.

Heres the deal: Ive found 1982 SSP mustang for sale. Its got the 302 carb V8, with a cobra T5 transmission, 3.55 gears and 8.8 axle, MSD ignition and a short throw shifter. The car has 140,XXX miles on it and the owner said the tranny was replaced around 20,000 miles ago. He said it runs smooth and strong and I plan on checking it out this weekend. He's informed me that It'll need a tune-up as well as a speedo cable, the front brakes will need to be replace within the year and the suspension will probably need to be replaced. Hes offered it to me for 2800 and Ill probably try to talk him to 25

I'm posting because I need to hear from more experienced owners whether Im going to be getting into trouble and making a bad investment. I would love to have a solid car to work on and upgrade, but my concern is that I'll encounter a major problem with the engine or tranny that will break my spirit (or pockets rather). I have no idea how long the engines and transmission lasts on these cars and I dont know if ill be facing huge costs when it comes to maintenance and repairs. My goal is to have a solid platform to build on and upgrade with performance parts, what I dont want is a car that runs good for a little and then encounters astronomical repairs. Part of me is saying: dont buy its going to be a huge money sink, and another part of me wants to go for it.

whaddya think???

thanks for reading

Hi, my name is Mark and I recently purchased a 1992 SSP that was owned by a member on here. This will be my sixth Mustang and the first that I have had to restore. I am a retired military police officer who was retired two years ago due to injuries sustained in Iraq.
My SSP is in pretty good condition, thou there has been a ton of time spent on correcting things that the last owner (not the member on here) managed to jack up.
I look forward to meeting some of you guys at the shows this year!

New in WI

Hello, Chad from WI here. I'm a former LEO, now a Certified Financial Planner. I bought former CHP #8990 (1991) from 1jerryl in SC earlier this year and finally brought it back to WI earlier this month.

The goal is to get it back into CHP livery hopefully yet this year, then contend with interior next year. The vehicle is very mechanically sound, body in great shape, and Jerry threw in all the extras! Looking forward to getting involved. And I love driving this thing...for a 20 year old car with 181K miles, it still has plenty of snap!

Welcome to the forum, Chad! It sounds like you've got a good plan in place for your CHP. Keep us posted on your progress, and please create a thread in the Member's SSPs Section with some pictures (we're all suckers for pics of SSPs! :D).

Here are a few pics of the Nova. Rock solid and original car from AZ. No rust whatsoever, but every piece of rubber is destroyed. Guess there are some positives of the desert......even included the build sheet.....

Ok that's what I thought. That is a clean car montegocj has had a very nice group of project cars. For reference, that 72 AMC in the background is an old LA FBI car.

Welcome !!

Jason is that Roman Collin's old 93 car he had?

03cobra 08-17-2011 06:41 PM

No... This car belonged to a buddy of mine in Austin. He painted it but a divorce forced him to sell unfinished. I finished the car up by old in service pictures, talking to SSP owners and talking to my brother in law which drove the DPS mustangs from 88 - 93 in west Texas. My friend Mike who owned the car before help me locate all the equipment. My car was assigned to the Rio Grande Valley stationed in Starr Texas according to the email I recieved from DPS through my brother in law. I love Romans old car, its sure nice.

NoDrama43 08-17-2011 08:10 PM

great. I wasn't sure if this was the same car or not.
