Big thanks to Rich for sending me the original taillights off of #8336:D
Today, I got my can of the correct SEM charcoal (the local paint store had to get a can from Salem, OR) and started painting parts. It took a couple hours to sand, hand buff, mask, scuff the black, and paint one taillight. Took another hour to just sand the mirrors. I also painted one taillight housing. It was said that white reflected better, so I painted the silver white. But there wasnt much difference in brightness when I compared the white one to another housing I restored with silver metallic paint. Time for some pics:) http://i1104.photobucket.com/albums/...7/IMG_3914.jpg http://i1104.photobucket.com/albums/...7/IMG_3916.jpg Wet sanded with 1500 http://i1104.photobucket.com/albums/...7/IMG_3923.jpg After hand buffing the bottom half http://i1104.photobucket.com/albums/...7/IMG_3932.jpg http://i1104.photobucket.com/albums/...7/IMG_3935.jpg Original taillight housing http://i1104.photobucket.com/albums/...7/IMG_3937.jpg After white paint http://i1104.photobucket.com/albums/...7/IMG_3950.jpg Buffed lense put over the newly painted housing http://i1104.photobucket.com/albums/...7/IMG_3952.jpg Masked http://i1104.photobucket.com/albums/...7/IMG_3956.jpg Painted :D http://i1104.photobucket.com/albums/...7/IMG_3959.jpg Before http://i1104.photobucket.com/albums/...7/IMG_3960.jpg After. One taillight assembly restored:thumbsup: http://i1104.photobucket.com/albums/...7/P1010552.jpg http://i1104.photobucket.com/albums/...7/P1010553.jpg Rich also sent me one of his extra new lenses(had a broken corner. The new is on the left, and the restored on the right. Silver housing is on the left and white is on the right.) http://i1104.photobucket.com/albums/...7/IMG_3963.jpg http://i1104.photobucket.com/albums/...7/IMG_3975.jpg :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D |

Excellent job Sam!! "Lookit him restoring like the big boys!" I bet your dad is proud! Thanks for posting the photos... it gives the rest of us motivation to get something done too!:D

I took a vid of the lights too. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PpkbJ4TG5tI |

Wow. Great work. I see a future in SSP restoration for you. ;)
|
Amazing work Sam! Great job!

CHP #8337
You are doing some fine work there Sam! Really impressed.
I looked at the tail light pics & the video and think the white painted buckets do look brighter. Keep it up! Bruce |
Looks amazing. Really nice and keep up the great work.
|
Keep up the good work. You'll be driving that '85 down to Ripon before you know it!

Thanks everyone:)
A couple more pics:D http://i1104.photobucket.com/albums/...7/IMG_3213.jpg http://i1104.photobucket.com/albums/...7/IMG_3435.jpg http://i1104.photobucket.com/albums/...7/IMG_3526.jpg http://i1104.photobucket.com/albums/...7/IMG_3741.jpg http://i1104.photobucket.com/albums/...7/IMG_3742.jpg http://i1104.photobucket.com/albums/...7/IMG_3743.jpg http://i1104.photobucket.com/albums/...7/IMG_3744.jpg Hopefully it will be going to the frame shop in a few weeks to fix the passenger rail damage and tweaked RH inner fender/radiator support. Then I can start getting the engine bay prepped for paint:D |
Why my car will be going to the frame shop.
http://i1104.photobucket.com/albums/...7/IMG_5086.jpg Notice that someone had heated the frame rail to straighten it. http://i1104.photobucket.com/albums/...7/IMG_5085.jpg http://i1104.photobucket.com/albums/...7/IMG_5090.jpg Needs brakes and some rust cleanup http://i1104.photobucket.com/albums/...7/IMG_5087.jpg http://i1104.photobucket.com/albums/...7/IMG_5078.jpg http://i1104.photobucket.com/albums/...7/IMG_5076.jpg Then I changed the wheels today so that I can get the Steel wheels powdercoated:D http://i1104.photobucket.com/albums/...7/IMG_5107.jpg http://i1104.photobucket.com/albums/...7/IMG_5112.jpg Casper should go to the frame shop this week once another car of my dads is finished. Then when it comes back, it will be stripped to the metal and body work started:) |
New video of paint removal;)

Picked 8337 up from the frame shop yesterday:)
The shop owner said that the right front frame rail was pushed down and to the right. He also said that the frame rail was an inch or more from where the it was supposed to be:eek: But everything is straight once again. Just have to do some finish work on the inner fenders. Some pics:D http://i1104.photobucket.com/albums/...7/IMG_6545.jpg http://i1104.photobucket.com/albums/...7/IMG_6547.jpg http://i1104.photobucket.com/albums/...7/IMG_6548.jpg http://i1104.photobucket.com/albums/...7/IMG_6553.jpg I swapped wheels once again. The chrome ones I put on got swapped to my "new" 85 convertible. I put two more urethane wheels on. Once I get another, I will strip the urethane coating off and have the wheels re-hooped. They will be my second set of 85-6 steel wheels. One set will have correct General XP2000 tires and the other set will have normal driving tires. http://i1104.photobucket.com/albums/...7/IMG_6592.jpg http://i1104.photobucket.com/albums/...7/IMG_6593.jpg Which is which?;) http://i1104.photobucket.com/albums/...IMG_5066-1.jpg http://i1104.photobucket.com/albums/...7/IMG_5067.jpg http://i1104.photobucket.com/albums/...7/IMG_5069.jpg http://i1104.photobucket.com/albums/...7/IMG_5068.jpg http://i1104.photobucket.com/albums/...7/IMG_5070.jpg And my "new" 85 convertible, my P71, and the 85 CHP behind the P71:D http://i1104.photobucket.com/albums/...7/IMG_6589.jpg |
Things have been going kinda slow on the SSP lately. Here is a little update for the thread anyway.
I have the interior dye for the plastics, so redying the interior will probably be next. Need to get some more of the SEM gray paint for the rest of the trim, then all that will be finished. The equipment is all cleaned up. Side mirrors cleaned (not the housings). Dash hull will be removed for cleaning and heater core replacement. Gonna pull the motor and stuff off of the inner fenders and firewall. Pressure wash entire car (try to strip most all the white and clean everything). Remove doors, windshield, rear window, and side windows(in doors). Sand ALL the paint off (not on the under side of the car or what is in the interior area though). Straighten all the body panels to perfection (body work):D Prime everything. Sand once again. Final primer(if needed, then final sand). Paint the roof and doors. Mask the roof and paint all the black (I will even try to replicate the factory "dullness" on the trunk jams and the under hood area). Sand and polish paint. Re-install windows, detailed engine, wiring, and interior. Install equipment and wiring. Put body panels/trim back on. Decals!:D And finish minor details. Hopefully the car will be in paint around the end of March. I kinda got carried away with the update LOL |
Anyone know where I can get the correct bracket for the Micor? I might have to make something for the CC1, but I want the visible brackets to be exact.
Better pics of the correct equipment. http://i1104.photobucket.com/albums/...7/IMG_5782.jpg http://i1104.photobucket.com/albums/...7/IMG_5783.jpg http://i1104.photobucket.com/albums/...7/IMG_5784.jpg http://i1104.photobucket.com/albums/...7/IMG_5794.jpg http://i1104.photobucket.com/albums/...7/IMG_5785.jpg http://i1104.photobucket.com/albums/...7/IMG_5787.jpg http://i1104.photobucket.com/albums/...7/IMG_5788.jpg http://i1104.photobucket.com/albums/...7/IMG_5791.jpg http://i1104.photobucket.com/albums/...7/IMG_5793.jpg http://i1104.photobucket.com/albums/...7/IMG_5795.jpg http://i1104.photobucket.com/albums/...7/IMG_5796.jpg http://i1104.photobucket.com/albums/...7/IMG_5797.jpg http://i1104.photobucket.com/albums/...7/IMG_5800.jpg http://i1104.photobucket.com/albums/...7/IMG_5801.jpg http://i1104.photobucket.com/albums/...7/IMG_5802.jpg http://i1104.photobucket.com/albums/...7/IMG_5806.jpg http://i1104.photobucket.com/albums/...7/IMG_5814.jpg http://i1104.photobucket.com/albums/...7/IMG_5815.jpg http://i1104.photobucket.com/albums/...7/IMG_5810.jpg Found one of these:D http://i1104.photobucket.com/albums/...7/IMG_5816.jpg http://i1104.photobucket.com/albums/...7/IMG_5817.jpg |
Nice pics. I can take a pic and post it of the brackets CHP used for the CC1, if you need me to. The Micor brackets can still be found on eBay.

Thanks Mike! I would have never thought that's what they would look like.
Need to find or make some now:D |
Mocked up the Fire Extinguisher today. Note that this is a correct CHP extinguisher.

Sam, great work. Somehow I missed the thread updates after it took off. Can't wait for more. Edit: what year was that fire extinguisher used? Can't say that I've ever seen one quite like that. Greg |
Quote:
Next month or two, paint and interior should be completed! The fire extinguisher is CHP issue. I believe they started using them in the early 80s. The holes fit perfectly with bracket. The reason you haven't seen one is because they are rare and still used by the CHP. My dad only has two... |
Some updates!
I finally figured out why my dash wouldn't come out. I had a couple more bolts that I didn't see:rolleyes: I also dislike the factory plug ends, there were so many!! But I finally got it out and cleaned it up with a Magic Eraser. The ducting will get washed, and the heater core will get replaced as well. I took the front seat covers apart and found that the bottom frame of the drivers side seat was cracked and bent in several places. It also had a replacement seat back on it. Most likely replaced while 8337 was inservice. The seat covers were washed with Blech-Wite Tire cleaner. Today I decided to steam clean the carpet and seats again. The carpet cleaned up pretty nice (except for the fading on the top of the trans tunnel). As I was sucking up the water, I could clearly see all the spilled coffee remanents!:p The seats cleaned up even nicer with more Blech-Wite and the steam cleaner. Most of the stains on the rear seat are gone. When my dad (or I) paint the car, the low gloss under the hood and trunk will be replicated. I want my car to look original. I don't like super glossy look. With some tape, I started peeling off the white repaint on the drivers door jam. I accomplished my goal of uncovering the unit #. That will be taped off when the door is repainted:D http://i1171.photobucket.com/albums/...1/IMG_9966.jpg http://i1171.photobucket.com/albums/...1/IMG_9967.jpg http://i1171.photobucket.com/albums/...1/IMG_0010.jpg http://i1171.photobucket.com/albums/...1/IMG_0015.jpg http://i1171.photobucket.com/albums/...1/IMG_0009.jpg http://i1171.photobucket.com/albums/...1/IMG_0019.jpg Door panels cleaned. http://i1171.photobucket.com/albums/...1/IMG_0022.jpg http://i1171.photobucket.com/albums/...1/IMG_0023.jpg http://i1171.photobucket.com/albums/...1/IMG_0060.jpg http://i1171.photobucket.com/albums/...1/IMG_0061.jpg http://i1171.photobucket.com/albums/...1/IMG_0063.jpg All clean http://i1171.photobucket.com/albums/...1/IMG_0064.jpg Carpet Before http://i1171.photobucket.com/albums/...1/P6190001.jpg http://i1171.photobucket.com/albums/...1/P6190002.jpg http://i1171.photobucket.com/albums/...1/P6190003.jpg Steam cleaned today http://i1171.photobucket.com/albums/...1/P6200025.jpg http://i1171.photobucket.com/albums/...1/P6200026.jpg http://i1171.photobucket.com/albums/...1/P6210039.jpg Rear seat before http://i1171.photobucket.com/albums/...1/P6190005.jpg http://i1171.photobucket.com/albums/...1/P6190006.jpg Rear seat after http://i1171.photobucket.com/albums/...1/P6210028.jpg http://i1171.photobucket.com/albums/...1/P6210040.jpg http://i1171.photobucket.com/albums/...1/P6210042.jpg http://i1171.photobucket.com/albums/...1/P6210043.jpg From the rear part of the carpet... http://i1171.photobucket.com/albums/...1/P6200023.jpg And I started taking the whole front end apart. http://i1171.photobucket.com/albums/...n/P6190010.jpg http://i1171.photobucket.com/albums/...n/P6190011.jpg |
Awesome work Sam. She's got to be getting close to a repaint now huh? Can't wait to see it :)
|
Looking good. How's the mechanical portion of the resto going?
|
Interior looks good, steam cleaning and some time can do wonders to a vehicles dirty interior. I believe I made 9 batches of cleaning sloution for our steam cleaner when I cleaned mine.

Those are some some good close up pic's of the FS CC1 and the Motorola Micor intalled where they should be. Its always a good feeling when you can reinstall a piece of prior police "CHP" History back on the car it once had and it it looks fantastic.

Didn't see these replies lol Not much more done on the car, other than I took my '84 carb off and started taking stuff off the motor and around in the engine bay. I had decided, that I wouldn't pull the motor, just strip it down and clean and repaint around it. BUT, after looking through Aaron's thread on his Kansas SSP, I have decided that... I will be going farther into this resto than most everyone has with their CHPs. Not saying that CHP owners have done cheap restos, I am just at the point of: 1, Repainting and putting it back together. or 2, taking the motor and trans out, stripping the front suspension and engine bay, and restoring the car like Aaron has done to his. It's either, hurry and wish in the future that I had done a more thorough job, or do it right the first time. I don't believe any of us 85 CHP owners has done this thorough of a job? Sorry Rich, I don't think 8337 will be able to attend Ripon this year as I had hoped :( , but I will try and get my dad to bring the EVOC. Just thought I should update this since I hadn't in a while. I am shooting for the quality of a magazine car, and possibly have my car featured in the new Fox Mustang Mag someday if it sticks around. That is also why I want the equipment to be as correct as possible. And thanks everyone for the kind comments before, they help keep me interested more and drive me to work on the car. It's kind of hard to where it is at right now, but I am trying to get it to paint before the summer ends :D I can't wait to see my car in a line up like this:D http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7229/7...5fa2fc5556.jpg |
Love that car such a great find.
