The '82 below was from the central division and involved in a gun battle on 1-19-1984 south of Madera of hwy 99. The car was driven by officer Jim Walls , ID 7763. I got my hands on the pictures yesterday, 34 years to the date. So close to getting the unit number!

Ret. Officer John Flagg, as seen standing next to a 1982 CHP assigned to him in a previous post, was kind enough to share a treasure trove of photos with '82 Mustangs in them. First up, circa 1983, Redwood City Officer Sue Lugaski standing next to 0595.

Next is Officer Joe Souza, again out of the Redwood Office driving what appears to be 0520. Great images and another new unit identified.

Thanks for the picture, TR1. Fitting that it's coming from you, the former owner of 2, '82 CHP Mustangs!
Is this the same spot? Regardless, the ONLY 1982 SSP, aside from 0600 and 1963, that is known to have surfaced and has an in-service picture. Now residing in Australia. Does anyone have a version without the watermark? |
Then and now

Tonight, a couple of my personal favorite pictures that are always worth revisiting:
Per Steve, "Below is a picture of it (0255), taken on February 21, 1984 at about 1 pm in the afternoon, on a very windy day. The location is in the Los Banos CHP area, on I-5 about 23 miles South of Highway 152. I am the CHP officer in the photo (age 27); this Mustang was my assigned vehicle. It was assigned to me in 1983, early in its career with the CHP. In this photo it has about 60,000 miles. Within a few months it had reached 70,000 miles, which in those days was when CHP took them off the road and sold them at auction. I was then assigned a new 1984 SSP Mustang." |

Thanks to Steve, another photo from that day in 1984 has been brought to light after all these years. Thank you, Steve for sharing these photos and your memories. Great picture!

Fun to see these pics. A CHP Facebook page seems to have many pics showing up that haven't made it around the hobby.

If you are looking for information on the agency your car served with, I would almost guarantee they have a fb page for retirees. You never know, there may be someone in the know about your car. Back to 1982 CHP Mustangs! Here's a period photo shoot with Officer Jimmy Faria and E870380. This is the first known photo of 0380. |
nice....
this ford chases....... like it. |

Hiding in plain sight in Robert A. Wick's 'The California Highway Patrol, Yesterday and Today' is now a third photo of 0360. I have communicated with the photographer, Charles Haacker, and according to him the negatives are long gone.

Per a couple officers in the know:
"It was one of the first one issued and was back in that condition in a short period of time, less than a month. After the prank it was stripped of CHP equipment and auctioned off to a wrecking yard we may have the Engine/transmission for use in another vehicle if needed. If my memory is correct there were 2 of the rolled soon after being issued. There were some things that happened to the early one that we had to fix on later one reinforce the seat back and install micro switches on the clutch to prevent starting in gear and rev limiters, to prevent valve float and over revving." "I remember that one. The 90 degree turn on Dusty Lane, Empire, New officer to the area. Won't mention any names." Presenting what remained of 0205 based out of Modesto: |

One more. This, I think, is a very cool picture. Although the unit number is unknown, the story is as follows: This big rig driver rounded a downhill curve on Route 20 in Yuba County only to find traffic stopped ahead. He swerved to avoid the vehicles and struck a rock embankment, which caused the truck-tractor to overturn. One person was injured. Accident investigated by Officers Lewis Pond and Danny Williams.

Regarding the Modesto photos, aside from discovering two new photos and identifying a new unit number, check out the roof numbers! I have never seen these on any other '82.

Very cool. Thanks for posting that.

Bad ending for #0391. Officer John Rolfes was the driver, I don't know if it was occupied at the time of the collision. Photo from eBay and info from a FB post.

Thanks for posting those. These pictures were a random find with a bit of drama involved. Fortunately, the lot being sold on eBay has been returned to its rightful owner. The executor of the officers will and I have been in contact and she will be sending scans of all the crash pictures and the newspaper article about the crash.
I am very interested in knowing how many of the '82's made it out alive. Between all the stories of Mustangs being grounded when it rained, twitchy at speed, on curves, etc, I have a feeling there are quite a few that didn't make it. I have a couple more crash pictures that I wI'll scan and post when I can. |
I worked with Officer John Rofles in the Westminster office.
He was a great guy, tall, funny. I believe this accident happened before I got to Westminster area from West LA area. I transferred to Garberville area Feb. 1986. While in Garberville one evening, I stopped a guy for speeding on Hwy 101. He had a citation in his pocket issued to him from John Rofles just a few hours prior to my contact with him HA He then was signed into the exclusive club of the Highway Patrol by given another citation by yours truly. John had transferred to the Yreka office at some point. I ran into him there. He retired out with cancer and died in 2009 or 2010. I cannot remember the date. I was one of the last to visit him in the hospital. It was sad to see him like that. He was a great guy. |
